Hey, Our 1996 yukon has this nasty smell whenever you turn on the Aircondition. My dad says it needs a new thermostat. Would that be whats causing the smell?

Don't use the A/C!!

Seriously, it probably is a little mold/mildew growing in the ductwork. When I lived in CA I had this same problem with a Plymouth Laser. I bought this stuff you sprayed into the vents and the intakes for the HVAC and it cleaned them out. Worked pretty good, too. Unfortunately, I've never seen anything like that since...

There is a problem with mold growing in the evaporator on A/C systems. It will need to be cleaned out. The mold starts when the moisture in the air condenses on the evaporator and then you shut the car off. You then have a dark, enclosed, moist place for mold/mildew to form. To prevent this in the future you should turn the A/C off a few minutes before you arrive and just blow the vent from outside to help dry the evaporator before you leave the car.

In addition to cleaning out the A/C system from moulds, most newer A/C systems need to be "purged" by running them in the "vent" position for a minute or two before shutting the car down. A friend of mine has a foreign car that has an A/C system that smells like stale urine when she doesn't purge the system.

Spray Lysol(sp?) in there....it works. My Neon gets that funky smell sometimes and my friend who has one too told me to try that and it worked great. Killed whatever it was stinkin' it up....!
