View Full Version : Gift from my wife, and now I am stuck...

So real quick, when our first son was born I pretty much had to get rid of my 92 Blazer. My wife wanted a lot of Baby stuff, so it was something I did. Fast forward 3 years to about 6 months ago, and my wife surprises me with a 73 Blazer body on a 78 frame. She was told it was a good deal by a couple of semi-car savvy people, and from a mechanical standpoint the mechanics I trust say the same thing. Corvette engine, new brake lines run, 6 inch lift, etc. She also wanted to try to cheer me up since I was medically retired from the Air Force a day before my 28th B-day.

The interior however....ugh. And since we have 2 children, a 3 year old and a 4 month old, my Blazer is sitting in the driveway, mocking me. At a bare minimum, I have to get seats for it (front and rear), and that includes mounting brackets. The current front seats are from a 98 Jeep Cherokee I believe but do not move far enough forward for anyone to get in the back (mainly my kids).

That lead me to this site (after eBay, other websites, phone calls to junk yards, etc). I have looked at the for sale area, but have noticed people using seats/center consoles from other vehicles that look a lot more comfortable. I have about zero experience when it comes to this. I have no issues getting the parts then trying to locate a mechanic/body shop in Las Vegas (my wife is still active duty at Nellis) and seeing what it would run to get everything switched out.

If anyone knows of any websites I can check I would appreciate it, or just info of "these seats and get these brackets" I can use that. The Blazer is not going to be a daily driver, but will go out a couple times a week. I also need a new tailgate, but I think I can locate that on my own (the shell, glass, etc).

Sorry for the long story, but I would rather give a little too much info then not enough. Besides, with Fathers Day coming up I can finally give my wife some ideas as to what to give me.

Just don't give up. You'll find just what you want and at a good price.

They are a bit pricey, but for the fronts you can get newer Chevy pickup seats and redrill the holes. You can get leather with integrated seat belts for the front. Some people are saying that with a little work you can install the third row seat from a Escalade, and it will have the integrated seat belts as well. If you use the front seats, you need to add some extra steel below the floor to prevent the bolts from pulling through since the seat belts are integrated. There are a lot of options for seats.

How is the center of the Blazer supported on a 78 frame. 78's had drop center frames for increased leg room in the back seat, and 73's didn't have this. Just curious as to how they did it, it may be a 76 or 77 early frame that didn't have the drop center.

I found leather/power seats from an 02 Silverado pickup that someone had wrecked and was parting out. Paid less than $300 for the two front and the rear seat.

Keep cruising e-bay, it'll be there eventually.

Thanks for the advice. I think I might have found some seats from a newer model Silverado. Going to go to a retired body shop/mechanic who is a friend of a supervisor of mine from when I was in the service. As soon as I start getting the project going I will post pics. I have a lot of pre-pics. Just need to get going now.

Of course money might be an issue...

Money is ALWAYS, isn't it.
