Im stationed in SE GA, and im from NW GA. Fell free to hit me up anytime about wheeling trips. We try to go once a month in the fall and spring. Dixie Run is in Oct too, we will be heading there for a week or so, feel free to come along. We do allot of riding in NW GA, NE and Central AL, and there are a few decent places just SE of ATL.

Originally I'm from Alpharetta. I grew up there. Where is Dixie run held at?

Tellico, TN; we try to leave on a Wednesday and come back on a Sat or Sun. We usually meet up in Cartersville and head from there. Its about 2-3 hr ride, but the best trip of the year. The weather is great and there is always raffles and a cookout on Sat night.

Well, I still gotta couple of things to finish up on my K5 before it's ready to roll. My trannys still not right and need to regear to about 4.88s or 5.13s, but I should have it ready by then. Kinda scared to put the first scratch back on it cuz I've made it so pretty now:crazy::D but I'm ready to.
I don't know if they're still around, but I used to do some trading with the Ga Bounty Runners back in the day when they had their meets in Dunwoody

well, the guy who just rebuilt my 700 evidently had no idea what he was doing but a good friend of my father builds drag autos and guarantees his rebuilds so there's where i'm probably headed. he built my father's 700 for his 470hp drag pickup 4 years ago and he hasn't had a problem yet. so hopefully whenever I get the money together I'll get him to build mine (not exactly cheap about $1100. that's when you bring him the tranny, they don't pull em or install em)
Just noticed your Avatar. My hats off to you for serving in the military and Iraq. I appreciate everything y'all do. Hope you get home safe and soon

Sounds like a decent builder. I had a guy i worked at a Ford dealership (i know) with that rebuilt a 2wd 700r4 for me for $450. He was a drivetrain guy and really knew his stuff. Might be able to dig up his number when i get back if your interested. I'd suggest a good set of servos and a shift kit, along with a big cooler after the rebuild. Hopefully your guy will upgrade the planets and get you some better clutch discs too.
Well hopefully we can get together this late summer and fall. How far from Atlanta and Savannah are you?

bout 3 hrs from atl and 3 1/2 or 4 from Savannah. I've got a big B&M tranny cooler on it now (supposedly the one for heavy hauling), external filter and gauge.
My builder said the 13 clutch pack, heavy duty servos, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember. He's good. It's Neal's transmission. "World's fastest automatics" is his slogan. They mainly build powerglides and stuff like that for drag racing.

I'm gonna try to have it ready for summer. But my big set back though is the gearing I want. I don't know how to do them and the labor on it (to have it done right) is ridiculous. So trying to figure out a less expensive way to do it.

If you dont mind me asking, what are you getting quoted? I know a few places, but they are mostly north of Atlanta. Might be worth it though it your quotes are high.
Honestly the cheapest, but maybe not the easiest way to fix you issues might be to go with a 465. It will solve your gearing and trans issue all at once. If you can find a fine 32 spline 465 that has the original adapter for a 208 you would be in business. The low 6.xx to 1 granny would be great with your 4.10's. Add to that the 2.6/7 of the case and 4 LO will be crawlin. After that get yourself a junkyard pedal assembly and the hydro bell housing, then go with all new flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. I did the swap on my '79. Spent less than 800 for the 465/205 and all the parts to make it work. Would be cheaper than a rebuild, and a hell of allot stronger. Only issue is finding that newer 32 spline model so you can use that t-case you just spent money on. If not, gettin a 10 spline 465/205 combo wouldnt be to hard or expensive. Just some ideas, save ya at least a grand to keep you from re-gearing.

truthfully, I never thought about converting it, but I like what you're saying. So what year/model chev would have a 465 that would fit my 241 and how much would a decent price for one be?

I always thought that it would be a serious pain to convert one to manual.

Well i had a '84 with the 32 sline output shaft, so i'd say atleast '84-'91.
I paid $450 for a 465 and 205 with the adapter. The next most expensive thing was a new flywheel, about $100 for a good, new one.

you don't happen to know of/have a thread on this swap do you?

Nope, its a simple strait forward swap. Its a little easier if you do the man linkage bell housing. But the linage likes to disconnect under allot of flex. But there are fixes for that too.

so, basically if I can find a truck with a 465/208 setup I can rob the 465 and everything off that truck that deals with the trans (the pedal, linkage, flexplate, etc....) it'll bolt up to my 241
hmatiak
06-15-2008, 09:07 PM
Its basicly that easy. Just to make sure, the 241 has a 32 spline input and the circle 6 bolt pattern right? If so the 208 and 241 should be interchangeable. Dont forget too that this setup will be a few inches shorter than the auto. And you need the whole pedal assy, it unbolts from under the dash, brake and clutch pedals.

hhhmmm...the whole shorter thing might be what prevents me from doing it cuz I just bought a high angle CV rear shaft for my K5 and if it's that much shorter my shaft might not work. I guess I could get it retubed but I dunno

The only weak link i have found running this setup is the foot that mounts to the crossmember for the trans/t-case. The piece is a cast part. So it doesnt take to well to allot of tq. If you find one that has never been repair then thats best. They cannot be welded back together when they break. You have to braze them back together with a torch and brass, not as easy as it sounds. I have looked into an after market adapter, but last i checked nothing was available. The best thing to to is fab a piece that aligns with the indexing ring on the t-case and the brace it to each side of the frame. All this is extra. As long as you find one that has never broke, and keep good bushings on the crossmember you should be fine.

When i did the 350/203 to 465/205 swap the length difference, if i remember, was around 3", so not a ton.

The more the merrier my friend. As long as you don't mind doing a little driving to get to the good stuff.

I'm PM you if I decide to go 465, but right now I'm unsure. I'm leaning towards getting my 700 rebuilt right now just because I really unfamiliar with doing any kind of swap like that and I'd pretty much be doing it solo
But I'll holla at ya whenever I get fully functional again
