View Full Version : California CK5ers to Moab in August caravan North & South>>>>>>

Hey California, So i'm thinkin about caravan here! I wanted to make sure I have enough vacation sceduled for this trip!
So if I got it right Aug. 23,24,25&26 is the Friday to Monday that CK5 decided on, right?
Acording to Mapquest its about 18hrs & 950miles from Modesto to Moab! So that 4 3/4 tanks of gas or 95 gallons or $175 smakers in gashttp://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/crazy.gif.
So I figure a good 10hrs a day driving (maiby more the first day, I'm open for whatever the group wants to do), but a good day or two to get there anyway.
So what day do we whant to show up in Moab? Friday(leave early Thursday morning) or Thursday(leave early Wednsady morning)?
What day do we want to leave? Monday or Eairly Tuesday?
During the caravan when we decide to sleep are we sleepin in our rigs? Motel6? I plan on camping the whole time, weather I'm in my tent or back of the K5.
I'm mostly trying to get the start date and end date for this trip so maibie the first step would be to get a caravan list started?

OK I'm in (wife said I could http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif) So who else is planning to go?????????

Here are my thoughts on this. First I would like to leave right after work on Wed. night. If it's 18 hours then that means everyone meet in Sacramento at say 8 or 830 P.M. and we're on the road, stopping at 3 or 4 A.M. for 2-3 hours and then hit the road again. Everybody would just nap in their rig. That puts us into Moab in the afternoon on Thursday. Now If we leave Tuesday morning i.e. 0600 then we'll be home Tuesday night unless somebody breaks on the way back. While we are in MOAB I will have my camping gear but wouldn't mind splitting a room with someone either. I will have some room on the trailer if someone feels they need to bring lots of spare parts.

vegas seems to be the fastest way. I think leaving wed. nite would be good but remember to add 2 hours to your expected departure time...it always ends up like that. Also is anyone brining a trailer incase some one breaks? I have possible access to a friends but not sure if my tired 400 can haul another k5http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/blush.gif

18 hours?? I did LA to Denver in 16 hours, in one day!! thats 1000 miles. Of course i switched off with my sister but, Swear i could get there in a day, I remember thinkiing, oh theres Moab, bet i could do this in a day. But anyway, i would have to vote for going thru Vegas, I 15 to I 70 and on into Utah, Thats a beautifull drive too, thru the Corner of Arizona up into Utah, real sceanic, but ya a caravan is a good idea, we can keep an eye on each other.

Well, if this were a perfect world I will be able to get my buddy Steve to take his semi and trailer my truck there. We are actually working on a plan to go to Moab for Easter Jeep Safari, renting a car hauler trailer and trailering up 7 trucks on his semi! Who knows, if it goes smoothly, maybe I can get him to do a repeat trip in August?? He does of course need to be paid, diesel paid (it will be way cheaper for the 7 of us to split his diesel bill than if we all drove separately and paid our own gas!), out of state permits, etc. But he is estimating it will cost us $400-500 each, maybe less, so that sounds like a deal to me! Get your truck there in one piece, no gas $$, no breakdowns - and then when we're done beating the trucks up, put them back on the truck and trailer them home!! http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif I will definitely let you guys know if it will pan out...I hope so. Plus, Ryan drove to Moab last spring in his Jeep, said it is a 14 hour trip from here...

Well as I said earlier I will be trailering and will have extra room if someone wants to bring extra tires, D44's, rear ends, engines and you know the normal things you bring wheelin with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously I will have some extra room for tires and what not on my trailer. I will look at the map here in a few minutes to see best route.

Well I guess it doesn't matter that much. Your way is about 60 miles farther than going through Reno for me. For you it is shorter to go through Las Vegas. I'm up for heading out at whatever time on Wednesday let's say morning and getting into Las Vegas that evening and meeting up with some of the other guys and infiltrate the casino's and/or strip joints and leave Thursday morning then it's only 8 hours to Moab from Vegas. WHat do ya think about that??????

How far is it to Moab for us Central Valley Folks? Maybe I can work something and get to go, probably wouldn't want to do too much wheeling in my rig, could probably run mine as a chase truck. Won't be able to say ya or na til about May, but I'll keep the idea floating in my head along with the CA fest.

Close Dan but I ended up puting in 4.11s rear and 4.09 front.
My rigs top speed is just a tad over 65 turning at 2800rpm. My new SSR35s got me there, before with the 33s top speed was 60 at damn near 3000rpm.
Personally I realy won't want to leave my rig in Vegas to hit the strip. Full convertable fully packed with everything......I'll just hang out at the meeting place(were ever that's gonna be) and slam a 12er then hit the sac for the 4am start to Moab on Thursday morning.
Damn this is gonna be KILLER!!!!!!!!
Moab is only 8hrs from Vegas? Cool!! Mapquest must be using 55mph to scale the time??? If anyone knows the I15 route thru Vegas and can think of a good meeting place for Nor Cal & So Cal to Hook up then spill the beans...I know we have pleanty of time but I am getting excited now!! everything going on right now is to prepare for moab. Mrs. Zakk is doing the grocery shopping with all the cupons so we can get the x-over steering and i am down to only 4 litres of diet coke a day so that we can afford the 39.5's. fender mods will be cheaphttp://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif but we might try to get a raptor too. which is $$$. also have a healthy 350 on the hook for $200 as long as it goes to a good home.
to be honest, if we decide to go to Moab by way of the Yukon & Florida Panhandle, i am fine with that. I want to meet all you guys and 'wheel. I look like a goof when i quote you guys in RL and use your handles instead of you names...

David, Its too early for me to tell if I'll be available to make the trip. Right now I'm in the process of getting a job with the Oakland Fire Dept. If I do get in (hopefully), the academy will run through Aug. But right now everything's up in the air. I don't know if I want to take my truck that far. If I'm free I'd love to tag along if you have room. I can split the gas $ with you. I'll keep you posted.

Not a problem. At Why2K5 I had Crash ride with me as spotter/picture taker and that worked out great. Well except for he dropped off the face of the earth and wasn't heard from again after that week. Kind of pisses me off too, cause he was supposed to send me the video's he took so I could digitize them and put em up on my web page. He drove his camaro out to Colorado cause he said his Blazer blew the tranny up the day before he left then he rode spotter for me that weekend. Anyways you are more than welcome to ride with me out there if you need to. Don't worry about the gas that's already been budgeted for. You could pick up some of the food or beer or something.

Good luck with the fire dept!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

welp i figured i would get it on this...my plans are still up in the air...with me goin back to school and not having a full time job after the first of the year i dont know what my cash flow is goin to be like......if i drove my truck there i would be topin out at about 60..since i just did the axle swap with 4:56 and no more automatic tranny so i dont have overdrive now...(at least i wont have blowin tranny problems now)....i really really want to go...i am tryin to get my friend Chris to go...he thinks he can...he is plannin on buyin a new truck in the next month or so...then he can tow his bronco there with my trailer...and then if one of us broke then we can just drive the other one back....oh man maybe i should have put off school for one more year just so i can save up some coin so i can do all the fun stuff...this was almost a last min thing for me to do...oh well i guess ill figure it out soon...so from the looks of the thread the plan is to head to vegas....i like that idea since i have never been there...XXX Bar here i come!!!! http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Has anyone considered the route that takes you through Reno, NV and onto Hwy 50? The distance is basically the same as the "Vegas Route".....

I know that most "map software" suggests the Vegas route....but that doesn't sound like a very "scenic" way to go (just lots of straight highways), and remember kids, it's gonna be August....so it's gonna be HOT!

If you take the "Reno Route"....you could pick up a lot more folks as you pass through the Sacramento area, and I have to believe that driving through the Sierras has got to be a lot more "scenic" and probably has lower temperatures too.... I'm just thinking about "photo opps" with all the K5s in the mountains....could be really awesome.

Anyway, I'm not trying to change the plan....but there is still MUCHO time to consider all the options, so I thought I'd offer this one for consideration..... http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

O.K. I'm up for the morning of the 21st. Should we set up some kind of schedule along the way? I.E. Tracy exit 0700 hrs, Modesto exit 0800 hrs, Fresno exit 0900 hrs, etc. or should we just pick a hotel to meet at Wed. night in Vegas? Personally I would like to be in a caravan all the way down there. I guess that means one central meeting place in this area, I.E. Modesto Exit at 10:00 A.M. on Wed. That way it gives people plenty of time to get there from Sac, San Jose, Fremont, etc. I personally would like to leave earlier than that but that's me. I want to make Vegas at a decent hour and not pull in at midnight.

I know someone who goes thru the Vegas area quite a bit. I will ask him if he knows of any place that will hold a bunch of Chevy's (ok, maybe a few other rigs too. http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif). I am going to talk to some more of the SO. Cal. guys and see if I can get them to commit to the trip. I know alot of them have mensioned it many times, but I have not heard any for sure things. I am one of those So Cal guys who is still "on the fence" about this. I want to go, but my schedule may get very confusing between now and then. I am hoping to change jobs between now and then, so will have to see what pans out with that. If I do go, my only concern is the Vegas stop - believe me, I LOVE Las Vegas, in fact, I would stay there longer if I could, BUT, I will probably be running the truck without a hardtop (or full soft top), just a bikini top. With all of the gear I will be bringing, I don't think I am too keen on leaving the truck in some parking garage, or even having it valeted. Has anyone come up with a solution to this? I do know a couple of people out in Vegas, so maybe I could stay with them while you guys party...I don't know.

Otherwise, I really want to go and am looking forward to it! If I can find a way to trailer it, I might do that, but we will see.

My first thought was to not go anywere out of the way or off Hwy 15 at all. Sure would hate to add to the 950miles one way. BUt if the whole carravan wants to head to a particular resting spot I'm good with that. What about behind a casino? Never been to Vegas but I have spent the night in a casino parking lot in S.Lake Tahoe before. BBQed and everything and never got hasseld. Anyone ever do that in Vegas? I found Red Rock Canyon on the net and it says there is a designated camp ground but that you can pretty much camp anywhere in the park.

I too do not want to go too far out of the way but Im not too sure how keen casino security will be on us kicking back in their lot.If we camped we could relax, drink, and when mother nature calls ya dont have to worry about finding a place to go /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

hey burt or any other nor-cal guys wanting to go to moab..i have been kicking this idea around in my head today and thought about using one of our semi trailers and loading up...3 trucks (i think thats the most i can fit on) and hiring a trucker to pull it back there...maybe have them drop em in salt lake and then drive from there...we could then fly into salt lake out of sacramento...the flight from sac round trip is $150 and kinda guessin at the price to haul the rigs there and back for like around 300 per truck...i dont know if that price is even close but i will check into it more if someone would be interested in doin that instead...my only reason for wanting to do it this way is so that i would be able to go and miss the min amount of school possible...doin it this way is the only way i can figure i would even be able to consider the trip...and i want to go really really bad...anyone interested?

Chaz,

It's 1000 miles give or take. You could leave Thursday morning and drive straight through getting there early Friday morning. Then leave Sunday at noon and be back Monday morning meaning you only miss two days of school.

I left Spokane, WA on a Thursday after work (5 PM) and showed up at Rapid City, SD at noon the next day (1000) miles. Dinked around until I met up with the guys I was going wheelin with that night at the camp ground. Wheeled all day Saturday and left that night and arrived back in Washington on Sunday afternoon so I know it's possible for that kind of trip.

Just a thought,
David

ok looks like i am goin now...school starts on the 19th of aug but i guess i can just get ahold of my teachers and tell them not to drop me...or better yet i can just take internet classes then i can still do them in moab...just need a phone line at the motel and i would be set..hopefuly i will be able tow my truck there...i dont really want to drive it that far...its not really fun to drive on long trips anymore...too bumpy and cant get the tires ballanced becasue of the beadlocks and lots of other little querks...but if worse comes to worse i will drive it there..
so the list of must do's:
1. Put on the rock sliders i have been too lazy to install
2. Get my drive line angels figured out
3. Cruz control rewired and working again
4. Tow points on the front
5. If a bag of money falls in my lap, a winch, or if someone wants to buy my 72 i can get one on there!

ALRIGHT!!! Cool Bro! I am glad you figured out a way to go!!
I will be driving this one! I have never drove that far in my K5 before and I wana give it a go! Plus I don't like the idea of having my rig on the back of some semi while I'm in the air! I'm very leary about leaving my rig anywere or with anyone!!
Just borrow one of your duallys and put your K5 on your trailer then set your alrm clock for early Wednesday and off we go........

I am coming from Santa Maria CA , where would be a good point to meet up with the caravan? I was going to head through to Barstow to get to Vegas. Any chance anyone is going that way or coming from my area (Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo counties)

I too will be going thru Barstow from 99/58 ( I have a map printed out in my cube of the route I'm taking from Modesto to Moab from Mapquest). The original thought is to crash out somewere around Vegas so when we get that figured out any and all that are coming from that corner or the US are more than welcome to join up with us!!! So tell one, tell ALL....
