Anyone heading up to Moab for this trip? If I get my th400 and 205 setup in the burb I will go. I will try and get 1 ton axles for the Jimmy too.

I really want to go, but my football schedule will most likely interfere with the timing of the trip. I am not sure my coaches would understand missing two-a-days to go fourwheeling. I'll know more as the time nears though.

I have some ideas, tell me what you guys think......

1. We should develop a contingency plan, in case someone breaks down during the trip, on how we can take care of them.

2. Get a list together of who's bringing what spare parts.. for an example: 10 of us bringing fuel pumps and no one has a spare 12 bolt rear axle.... DOH!http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

3. Get together a few times before the trip, and discuss plans.

Just some thoughts......

When is this trip? Nevermind I see when it is and I may be able to make it, but that's a long time away. I want to go! Moab's not that far, and I may just have an extra seat for someone that wants to chip in on gas and expenses. Gotta see if my rig makes it through the summer without any major problems.

I had a lead on one, but it fell through so I am looking for another one. I am putting the dana 60 that I have in the burb so I can slow down the burb and trailer for when I head to MOAB. I would rather break on the trail then no be able to stop through the hills :)

I would love to go... only forseeable problem would be if my 350 craps out before then, I'll need a D60, and TH400/205 to support the 454 `replacement engine' I have. I'll be taking my K20 suburban, possibly the C20 sub as a tow vehicle to save on Fueling costs, if I can get a trailer to haul with that has onboard brakes... ( I am not hauling 3 tons without trailer brakes) eitherway, I'll have room for anyone who wants/needs a lift. might even be able to tow someone up ( I'll have to install an electric brake setup in the k20 to do that, and your trailer will have to have brakes) at the least, I'll be able to haul all sortsa parts/food/etc up without a problem.

what kind of trail is Moab? I've got exactly Zero experience with that area, and would like to know what kind of buildup I should be looking for to make that trip. if you don't want to clutter up this post, send me a PM with general info on the area...

thankyou,
-Rich

Moab is mostly slickrock.... Great traction! It's common to "bark" your tires during climbs as the traction is so abundant. All radial tires work well. Low gears and lockers are a must! Little bit of sand here and there, but mostly sandstone climbs and really scenic!

Since I'm probably not going, I'd be happy to let you all borrow my spare parts (limited) barring that I don't break them this summer. I don't have much now, but I have spare axles for 28 spline 10 bolts (F&R) coil, hubs, and a few other assorted things. You all are welcome to take them along if you need them. When the time comes, let me know, and I'll let you all borrow them if you need them.

Thankyou sir,

on another note, do you have a shackle setup for the K20 suburban? (56 inch springs I believe, although its a 73, so I'll need to measure them to be sure they weren't using 52's then) I'd love to eliminate the blocks, and if I could get one of those wackey shackles like you have on your green blazer, I'd probably be more set then would be legal....

"Wackey shackles"..... : D.... I like that..!

Funny that you mention the 56" springs. Just a couple of weeks ago I went to BadDog's house and measured the frame and springs under his 1 ton. The end result is - if you have 56" springs - that it's prolly easiest to move the rear shackle bracket to the same position it would be with the 52" springs. Seems like a lot of work - but I think it would be the best way to get there.

I've never installed my suspension on the back of a "Sub" (only trucks and Blazers). Usually people w/ these big trucks like to tow heavy stuff, and I really don't recommend my setup for towing. But if you really don't haul or tow, and you wanna make it stretch out in the rear - let's talk!

Oh!... and please don't call me "sir" anymore..

I will definitely be going to this. I most likely will tow my rig. No top, half doors, etc. I'm in the middle of a mass savings spree. I talked to my fab guy and for around 2500 I'm gonna ditch front fenders, narrow the hood as it gets closer to the radiator, and basically begin replacing factory sheetmetal with tube. The cab will stay virtually intact, and there will always be enough room for the rear seat. I may bob the blazer before I go but I like to see over the hood and by narrowing the front clip a bit and making room for 38s to 42s I'll be much happier. If I dont save up the 2500 i will probably at least bob the blazer. That's only gonna run me about 1800 with steel, fuel cell, and labor. I may also opt to get rid of the P.O.S Arizona Drivelines Driveshaft I have in the rear. No way I'm gonna break this baby in MOab again! I still need to contact jess and see what I can swing.
Anyway.
Im going and a buddy from Flagstaff (3/4 ton Chevy) will most likely be towing me. He's a mechanic so great ride along companion.

no problem si...

sorry, its from hanging out at work, and the kind of jobs I work that do it... :-P I'll be willing to bet that the shackle mount holes are predrilled in my frame anyway, so its not like it'd take much more then an angle grinder to get the old rivets out, and new bolts to put them in. I'll have to take a look at what all I have, and see what it'll take. I don't ever tow anything with this truck: its the 4x4 toy, and if anything might end up getting towed by my C20 suburban, should I make it too extreme to drive on the roads. ( you might remember it from that fullsize run we did a while back... the grey and black one with no windows, bald tires, and a scared looking driver)

you have anything for wicked flex up front? or would that become too unstable with something like the wackey shackles. ( I couldn't think of a better description for those things, and I doubt anyone else could either)

thankyou in advance,

-Rich

What kind of locker is that? Make sure everything is in good shape ready to drive 500 miles beat on it and then drive another 500 miles. Other then that there's trails there for every level of wheeler. I'm sure Steve will have a list of trails to sign up for and some kind of description to let people know how difficult the trail is. Maybe the local guys are going to lead the runs.

Might have to make this one! Is anyone from Tucson and areas south making the trip? I'd like to explore setting up a convoy and meet up with the Phoenix/Mesa/Scottsdale crowd. Thoughts anyone?

Now for a quick question. Motor and trany are fresh and strong. U-joints are new also. Diffs are open and 10 bolts (ouch!). So, with these weak links, should I make the effort?

marv_springer
03-21-2002, 09:01 AM
I think you're gonna have a lot more fun with at least a rear locker. If you've got an open rear end - scrounge up the $$ for a LockRite at least. They're easy to install and relatively cheap. It'll greatly improve the amount of fun you'll have in Utah!

Some people talk bad about Lock Rites, but I've had good luck with them. "Ol' Green" has one in each axle, but I did have to replace the rear one after about 110k miles (I installed the first one in the rear in the early 90's)/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif.

Well if I go now it will be in my burb since I am parting out my Jimmy. I need to finish my other projects like the Firebird and GTO. I also want to build somrthing smaller and lighter, like start with a jeep, extend the frame, put a chevy 350, 700r4, klune-v, and a NP241) on 38.5s. But if I still have the Jimmy in tact when it comes time I will take that. My buddy is buying a K5 so I will make him take his.

We probably need to start thinking about where and when to meet and a general route for the caravan. I'm thinking getting there and back will be half the fun. Is the best route up through Flagstaff or heading east to 191 and straight up? Any suggestions?

I might be in. I am debating life right now, and I am thinking about going to UTI, so I would be in Phoenix next August instead of CO.
