View Full Version : Group camp site

I was checking out camp sites for Moab, and I noticed a few places offer group camp sites. Sizes range from 20 to 200. I think this would be a cool way to go. Everybody could hang after the days events, and not be spread who knows how far. Plus it is cheaper and you don't have to worry about getting a place to crash on your own. What do you guys think?
Mike.

I would be willing to make the arrangements. I would need to know how many want in on it, so we could get the correct sized site. Pre payment might be needed, I don't, I'd have to check on that. I just wanted to see how many people would be interested.

I'm in on that too! I had just planed on wingin it after rolling in. I have never been there so have no clue which camp site would be the closest/best location to pick?? At Blazer-Fest in Calif. we take over a group camping area and that works out GREAT!! We had more than one camp fire going and it was like a mini neighborhood. Kinda neat to walk around and hang out with al the different groups and listen to the campfire stories while bummin a brewhttp://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gifhehehe
Mabie someone better verify we can have campfires???

I'd rip the doors off at moab in case of rain or snow or a windstorm that hurls a lot of dirt at you...

group camp sounds like a good idea... heck, we could even split out by state contingency to some extent, and have raids on the other states, and steal thier flags.... err wait... thats in scouts.... err thats a bad example that I never set....
at any rate, my plans were to throw an air mat in the back of my suburban, and wherever I parked it at would be called home for the night. of course, group campsite would allow me to stow some gear out of the truck, and not have to worry about things coming unstrapped, and flying around.

Ok I got the go ahead from Steve, so tommarrow I will be making some phone calls to a few of the sites that take groups and have the nicer amenities. Not all list rates for groups, which is why I have to call, But the ones that do are around $5 per person. So if you, your wife, and your three kids are coming (that would be me) then it would cost you $25 dollars a night. Also I noticed on some that they charge for extra vehicles. I think it was also $5 per extra vehicle. I don't know if this applies to trailer'd vehicles, but it is something to keep in mind. I will try to get around this if possible. So if all of you that are interested would reply and let me know how many in your party, and how many vehicles that would help me get started.
Thanks,
Mike.

I should also add I would need to know which nights you plan on being there. I think I have it narrowed down to 2 places, Slickrock Campground and Archview Campground. The guy at Slickrock seemed more receptive to our situation. He wants $6.54 per person per night (that includes tax). Extra vehicle didn't seem to be a problem, so there shouldn't a charge for those. I might be able to talk him down in price, but we would need a lot of people to commit asap. This is my first choice. Acrhveiw can handle our group as well, and their rates are a little cheaper, $5.45 per person per night. The person I needed to talk to about this was unavailable so I couldn't get as much info, I am not sure about an extra vehicle charge. At both of these places the sites are in the dirt, as is the case with most of Moab. There was one that had a group area in the grass, but it was the most expensive at $8.72 per person per night. And they were not very receptive to our situation. They would charge for extra vehicles, if they could fit them. So it looks like dirt to me. The two places do have the following amenities:
cabins
trailer hookups
drinking water
flushing toilets
dump sites
showers
laundry
swimming
and food
That is the curent status of the group site project. Any input or advice is welcome.
Thanks,
Mike.

OK, here's the scoop. I've stayed at Slickrock before. It is a pretty nice place, but the cabins there are lousy. Most of the sites are pretty well shaded by lots of large dogwood trees.
I've also stayed next door at the Portal campground. It has a huge, grassy field that would be great for getting everyone together in one area. They also have nicer cabins, but they only have about 7 cabins, while Slickrock has 14 (though the cabins are much nicer at Portal). I don't remember much shade at Portal, so since it will be August, and the blast furnace will be set on high, Slickrock is probably going to be the best bet. Lots more shade... http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/cool.gif Portal's web site is <a target="_blank" href=http://www.moab-utah.com/portalrv/index.html>http://www.moab-utah.com/portalrv/index.html</a> in case you want to check it out.

No crapper. You get to hike to the central crapper, just like all the tenters. http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif
The cabins at the Portal campground are little log cabins. There's a bed, a couple of chairs, a microwave, mini-fridge, and I think there was a coffee pot in the room. Oh yeah, and the A/C. http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/cool.gif
The cabins at Slickrock are basic plywood shacks, in poor repair (or at least they were when I stayed there 3 years ago). I don't remember them having a fridge or microwave, though there was A/C.

Ok boys and girls here is the scoop. I have made reservations for us at the <a target="_blank" href=http://www.moab-utah.com/slickrock/campground.html>Slickrock Campground</a> from noon on Friday the 23rd to noon on Monday the 26th. Basically I got our foot in the door. Because I had to use my own money I reserved the minimum number I could to get us started, 10 peolpe. This gets us a group site that we can add to. I will be calling them periodically to update our numbers. These are the people I have down as wanting in on the group site:
heavymetal 4 persons 1 vehicle
Gold Rush 1 person 1 vehicle
55Willy 2 persons 2 vehicles
FRIZZLEFRY 1 person 1 vehicle
KRAZIE87K5 2 persons 1 vehicle
Burt4x4 2 person 1 vehicle
Capman2k 1 person 1 vehicle
Ddragggon 1 person 1 vehicle
muddysub 1 person 1 vehicle

denver75K5 1 person 1 vehicle
Greg72 1 person 1 vehicle
blzr83 1 person 1 vehicle
Danno 1 person 1 vehicle
chevyfumes 1 person 1 vehicle
jekbrown 2 persons 1 vehicle
Thunder 1 person 1 vehicle
Karphreek 2 persons 2 vehicles
Solowookie (cabin) 1 vehicle
tRustyK5 (travel trailer) + 1 vehicle
roostr3269 2 persons 2 vehicles
87GMCJimmy 1 person 1 vehicle
californiaK5 2 persons 1 vehicle
sparky87K5 (travel trailer) + 1 vehicle
96C4and91K5 2 persons 1 vehicle
If I missed you, didn't get the right # vehicles or persons, or added you incorrectly please let me know. The rate is $6.54 per person per night. So for example my family of 5; me, my wife, my 16yr old, my 14yr old, and my 5yr old would be ($6.54 X 4 persons =$26.16 X 3 nights = $78.48 total). 5 years and younger are free, and there is a SLIM chance 6 to 17 year olds are a little less, but don't count on it. I will check when I call two update our status. I do not need any money sent for the group camp site, I will cover the deposit until we get there. However, please have money ready for when we get there, cash would make the whole proccess headache free. If one peson has a credit card and another has checks, and so on it will make it hard to ring up as a group. Now for the people who would like a cabin or a hook-up site for their trailer, cabins are $27 a night and trailers are $20 to $22 a night depending if you want cable. These need to be done as soon as possible as they tend to go quicker. You can click on the site above and reserve these yourself ( let them know you are with the ColoradoK5 club), or I can do it for you. If you want me to do it I would be happy to. I would need to have you send me the funds for that though as it would be additional funds out of my pocket. I'm not made of money you know! <img src="http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif">
If you think you are going to go and want in on the group site, speak up and say so. You can always cancel, as long as you give me plenty of notice. As soon as possible is best, but I would say a week before Aug. 23rd would be ok too. Adding that late could be impossible, so please let me know. I think this is going to turn out to be a awesome get togather.

If you are staying in a tent you don't need to send any money, you just need to bring enough cash with you to pay for the site for the number of people, times the the number of nights, times 6.54 equals total cash needed. For you and your guest to stay all three nights would be $39.24, and that includes the taxes.

Cool, I have stayed at slickrock before it is nice and should work for us, I plan on calling a guy who lives there this week he said he has some ideas about a meeting place, I'm sure some people will stay at hotels and such so a meeting place would be nice.

Jeff, you may want to call the campground directly to find out about the beds. The cabin that I stayed in there a few years ago was VERY cramped. Not much floor space at all. Better to find out now that when you arrive. http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

The cabins are small and basic, probably set up for two adults. You might be able to have the kids on the floor, but it would not be all that comfy. Sorry, I did the best I could to make it work for everyone.http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/frown.gif On the bright side the campground RIGHT next to us, <a target="_blank" href=http://www.portalrvpark.com/>Portal RV Park</a> has much nicer cabins. They are a little more expensive, priced from $35 to $42, but I'm sure that they would work for you and you would still be right next to everybody else. You could probably just walk over. I hope this works for you, I'd hate to cause anyone any problems.

Rene, If you want me to call and reserve a spot for your trailer, I would need to have you send me some money. I could only swing the group spot. The cabins and trailer sites have to be seperate. You can call and make the reservation yourself, just let them know you are with the ColoradoK5 club. I'm not trying to make it any harder for those that want cabins or trailer sites, thats just the way it worked out. In any case I just want to make sure there is no mis-communication. I want to make sure you have a site waiting for you. Let me know if you prefer I reserve a hook-up for you.

By the way a camp day is noon to noon. ( check in and check out) Otherwise I assume 1 person, 1 vehicle, noon on th 23rd to noon on the 26th.

So ages, well we are both of the drinking age (by more than I like to admit to http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif), so I guess you can say adults (although some people would disagree http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif). We will be showing up with the California Carivan on Thursday and leaving Monday. Just one truck at this time. If anyone else I know decides to go I will get it up here ASAP. Thanks for all the time and effort putting this group camping thing together. This is going to be one hell of a weekend, I can't wait.

Bill,
I'll be staying at the slickrock with our trailer, wife and ankle biters. I was gonna make a reservation when I get paid on the 8th. I might even spring for cable...http://coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Just looking at the Calendar...I think I want to arrive at the Slickrock campground late thursday afternoon (Aug 22) and leave the Tuesday morning (Aug 27). That should leave 4 full days without setting up or packing up to enjoy the wheeling etc.
I guess departure would have to be early (6 am) Wednesday the 21st of Aug, possibly hooking up with a few other guys in Pendleton OR along the way. I'd be looking at stopping for the night a couple of hours past Boise ID and making it to Moab by late afternoon of the 22nd.
How's that sound?

just the Jimmy. I will also most likely have a SMALL trailer (ie, just big enuff for my trail tires!) nothing that you'd sleep/live in, just for gear.. dunno if that makes a diff or not.
> and which days you plan on needing a camp site
thats the tough question ...kinda follows along with my other thread. It seems to make the most sense to me to get to moab later in the day on the 22nd. This may change if you other pacific northwesters can convince me that I'm just dumb. ;)
> I would appreciate it. By the way a camp day is noon to noon.
vital info...I think I'd be nice to be able to do SOME setting up of my camp site before the event starts (noon on the 23rd right?). I dont wanna wheel with all my camping crap in the back of my rig, thats a disaster waiting to happen. Last thing I need is to roll and have all my gf's hygene stuff go flying all over the trail. =(
at any rate, sign me up for the 22nd mike. thanks much!

Duh! /forums/images/icons/blush.gif Anyways, count me down for myself (27), my buddy Steve (27), brother Preston (26) and my other buddy Steve (27). We will have my K5, my brother's 72 Bronco and my buddy Steve's 75 F250 - and all three of these rigs will be on the back of a Kenworth semi with lowbed trailer!! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif So, hopefully the big rig can fit in somewhere? Please let me know if this will be a problem, hopefully it will be cool. Thanks for the efforts at putting this together! If I get any more people going, I will let you know!

Mike, it is sad to say but I'm off the list /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
it was kinda a pipe dream from the start but being laid off really hurt my chances of going( no money), and now that I am working I can't get the time off and haven't had any real progress on the wagon lately. infact it is in more pieces with the updates of going to 57" fords and a whole slew of other goodies.
what day you guys planning on meeting in Pendleton?

I am back to a maybe! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif Keep your fingers crossed. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
OK, here is the scoop on the campsite. When you get there you need to tell them that you are in the group campsite for Mike Bergman (thats me /forums/images/icons/wink.gif ). You then need to pay for you stay in full. With the tax it comes to $6.54 per person(over the age of 5), per night. For example if there are 2 people in your group and you plan on staying 5 nights you will need to pay $65.40. This is for tent sites. Slickrock stated that if you need a hook-up for a trailer or RV you need to contact them and make your own reservation. If you have any questions please let me know.
I hope to see you guys there /forums/images/icons/smile.gif .(knock on wood)

I got an e-mail from someone regarding the campsite the other day, however my outgoing mail doesn't work so I'm clearing it up here for everyone.
I reserved group camping for us with Slickrock at the rate of $5 per person(ages 6 and older) per night (not including tax). The normal rate is $16 per campsite per night for 2 people or $26 per campsite per night for 4 people (not including tax). So we are getting a reduced rate as far as I know. Also the campground is reserved in my name (Mike Bergman), when you get there you need to let them know you are with Mike Bergman's group campsite. You will then pay THEM for how ever many people and nights you plan to stay, NOT me. A few people have said they will pay me when they get there. I just reserved the site, I did not pay for everybody. I hope this clears up any confusion. I look forward to meeting you all at Moab. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I'd bet that heavymetal is on the road somewhere, on his way to Moab. You probably need to call the campground yourself. Their number should be on their web page at http://www.moab-utah.com/slickrock/campground.html /forums/images/icons/cool.gif
