View Full Version : Midwest Summer K5 Thing - pre planning
Mudzer

Well, the question at hand is - "When and Where?"
Give me some feedback on where you think this event should be. We went to Disney for the Spring K5 Thing, so perhaps somewhere else, like Attica, Potosi, Arkansas (Jeff found a good one), Iowa or Kansas. If you guys know of a good spot, let me know.
I personally was thinking about either Attica or Potosi. Potosi is good for the more milder group (which I think we fit nicely). Attica is a place where you are sure to get damage. For more info on Potosi, check out the Midwest Spring K5 Thing writeup on the Trips page.
I can't keep using the "my truck is not done" excuse, because it's never done! So, lets start planning - summer is nearly over. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Are there any good places in Missouri? There is always the pipeline in Wisconsin too.
Do you have a webiste for wheeling in attica?

DISNEY!!!!!!! Why? 'Cuz it's bad a$$$!!! And because it's close to me (3 hours!). Anyhoot, that is my vote!

I vote Potosi or Disney, or some place in Arkansas.

Hmmm... I personally would like to see some new scenery, and something a little closer to home /forums/images/icons/wink.gif ! I would like to vote for Attica or Potosi, but the hill climb is what really scares me at Potosi!!! Not sure I like that obstacle yet... I guess I'd have to see it in person! /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
I am also going to try to attend the "Huge wheeling event Aug 31-Sept 2" that 85mouse posted up about. There are some pretty challenging looking trails there! /forums/images/icons/grin.gif
Just my .02

You are talking about the "Wall" at Potosi. Its a pretty good little climb. Remember, SK_15 made it in a stock K5 up the easy line. The easy line is still one heck of a pucker factor. You should see the video from the Spring K5 Thing 2001! Several of us tried real hard to roll a K5. Layne nearly accomplished it. I too would like to do Potosi, I havent been there in nearly a year.
I'd really like to try and get you guys down here next year for a run at the orvpark (http://www.orvpark.com) . We could break it up depending on how many showed, so everyone could try trails that they wanted, but lockers would be mandatory on some of the harder trails. And body damage would also be guaranteed for some of the harder trails. My blazer won't be in any kind of condition to make the rest of the runs this year, but next year, I'll be ready for sure....
Neil, let me know if you want to plan something for next year.

Jeff,
I will definately keep you posted as to any future runs. What ever happened to Clints buildup? Also, whats going on with your rig since you cant make it?
later,
Neil
Clint is still broke, but working on it slowly. He is on track to finish his blazer in about 3 years /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
I need new tires, and a trailer, and to finish rounding up parts for a doubler. The tires on it now don't have much tread left. If I had new tires, I could possibly make a run this year. Maybe I can get some before october, but I doubt it. Most of the money is being saved to build a house and buy a few acres.... I gotta have some room and a bigger shop, so the vehicle stuff is on hold for now.
But, next year is lookin' real good for "automotive expenses" /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I think its only fair that we have at least one run in Attica seeing as how the last summer K5 thing was in Oklahoma, that way some more illinois and Indiana guys can make it. As far as when to have it, Im up for anything, but preferably later in the summer when its not as hot.

If we do the summer run in OK, we can all hit the lake. i have 2 boats there and one waverunner. I am sure we could get some other boats. I would like to see Layne Oberto on some Skis. HAHA. Just an idea.

Potosi is 1.5 hours south of St. Louis off of Hwy 21. Check out mapblast or something to estimate mileage. Glad you will attend when we have a run.

If you have a big enough boat and long enough skis and a really big body of water, I might be able to get up on skis. Its been 2 years since I have been on skis or a kneeboard. Not sure if I can even ride a knee board after the knee surgery. But hey I would try skis.

Okay guys,
Give me some dates you have open. This event will not have sponsors. I will only do that once a year. We may have decals made depending on the time constraints and amount of people interested.
I will be open for wheeling anytime after this month. I would like to keep the week of the Blazer Bash open because I may be going. I will also be attending the Knoxville Ia run on Labor Day.
KRAZIE87K5
07-12-2002, 03:00 PM
I'm in FL from 7/24-7/30... then Knoxville, Iowa for the labor day run. After that I'll be available. Unfortuneatly for me, I have to skip Blazer Bash this year... With the new baby and all, $$$ for the trip, time off work... just too much. Maybe I can plan better for next year's run! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif So I'm available anytime after Sept. 1st!
Now, lets get this gathering a little closer to IL, and see who is willing to drive 12 hours to get there! /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif Attica?!!!

Hey Dan I guess you must have forgot... /forums/images/icons/grin.gif I nearly gave myself the Farthest Distance award this year because I drove from St. Louis to Warsaw, Missouri - Warsaw to halway to Nevada, Missouri (thats when I realised I forgot the prizes at Steve's in Warsaw). I turned around and drove another 3 hours out of the way back to Warsaw, then met up with Scot for another 3 hours worth of driving to Disney! Total trip.. 10 hours + or -. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif
KRAZIE87K5
07-12-2002, 04:19 PM
Now now... your little bout with forgetfulness doesn't count for trip time! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif I think that 12 hours straight driving (*in one direction!*) certainly counts for something! So thanks again for giving me the award!

CAT HOUSE!!!! It's near Dighton Kansas, where I grew up.Looks like people want some different scenary so why not in dighton? Besides it would be a great chance for some of us to get to meet you guys because it seems things are planned so far away from me and all my friends ALL of the time, (except disney but I wasnt ready for that) and it would be a great time to introduce people to colorado K5 and get some new people brought on here. My uncle has a nice big shop in Dighton with a welder and such so he could help out anyone that breaks down, he also has a lot right next to his house that people could probably park in, my best friends father owns the All-Pro parts store there and there is a Car-Quest store in town. There is a hotel and motel in Dighton. I think it would be fun I would like to help host it out there!! All my friends live there and I can think of quite a few of my friends there that have K5's with the people from here and all the people there it would be a great turn out! It's awesome, when I was younger we went there all the time, My dad is friends with the guy that owns it so we could probably get a good deal on things. It's really nice, I would really like to have it here and will do anything I have to do to have it here. KANSAS DOES HAVE GOOD WHEELING!!!!! /forums/images/icons/cool.gif /forums/images/icons/wink.gif /forums/images/icons/smile.gif /forums/images/icons/cool.gif /forums/images/icons/wink.gif /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Phew... thats 940 miles from me!!! I wouldn't be able to make a run like that. That's $150 in gas each way, and $900 in Swampers when I get home!!! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif Getting to Disney was a feat in itself... I think Shields, KS might just be the impossible (without a tow rig!)
I still have to leave my vote set at either Potosi or Attica, and Attica is my preferred choice! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Dighton, KS looks killer, and wouldn't be too far out of the way for me, but I know a lot of the others that are in the "Midwest", that would be a major road trip for them. As far as timing is concerned, I'm open to most of the rest of the year, with the exception of the last week of September.

I need to know in advance, how many of you do not have the Summer Run Decals and would want some? We need to pre-order these from Lyons Design. I believe Lyons charges me about $4 a decal shipped. I am not positive, but I think Attica has a wheelbase restriction, so anyone that has a truck would not be able to run there, I believe Blazers wheelbase is just under the limit. You want to know what I think??? I think everyone should stop their crying and start driving to where ever it is that the poll decides... I drove 12 hours to get to Disney. I would do it again, but I would prefer to keep those trips to ONCE per year! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif I think that if everyone drove to only one distant run per year that would be pretty reasonable.
But face it... the folks near St. Louis have it best... they are located as centrally as central gets. Everyone else might have to sacrifice some of their Swampers to make it on these trips! I for one will work my danm-dest to get to all the Midwest K5 Thing trips I can get my hands on (within 12-14 hours travel time.) Its not that bad!

"Attica is a place where you are sure to get damage" that is what is not for me, unless i get some good sliders, bumpers. I would think that Attica, lockers are a must.
LOL
I would not mind going to Ark or Potosi. or maybe that iowa place. I think we should just hammer a place down before summer is over. (not tring to be pushy at all)
I can go ever other weekend. some weekends the wife is on call and she would not be going on the run, the other weekends we go to Grand Lake.
thebigdaddyof2
07-18-2002, 01:44 AM
Jeff is correct....Attica has a 107" wheelbase limit. Anything over that and you are not allowed on the trails...you are only allowed in the sand/gravel pits. Sorry Mudduck.
On the location of the Summer K5 Run, I am not as peticular of the location as I am of the date. Mudzer, can you start a poll for the weekends available? Also, are we taking into consideration of a number of us attending the Labor Day run in Iowa? I would like to make that one.
The only drawback to Attica is the lodging. Very few, if any motels in town. And, the ONLY campground is 7 to 8 miles out of town. The campground is nice with bathrooms and hot showers (free) but the air-up and air-down is a hassle....not like Disney where you get off the trail and you ARE at the campground & town.
Aired down Swampers running up and down mainstreet Disney...that kills me!

I agree with Dan! I must admit, at the present, I'm not up to driving 700+ miles to wheel a weekend, but let's get something nailed down soon. My kids start back to school in a month! I've already prepared to take them out of school so we can go on vacation, and I'm going somewhere. The wheelbase restriction at Attica sounds like a no go deal, but I don't expect people to have to drive two days to go wheelin', either. Let's get a place and date set so people can plan for it. The less time we have to plan, the less people will be able to make it.
John

Agreed... we need to get a date set, and then the location set - ASAP! I looked at the poll Neil setup...
Dighton, KS is #1
Attica, IN is #2
Disney, OK is #3
Having said that... Dighton is WELL out of my range. I can't drive 1000 miles on swampers (ONE WAY!!!)... there will be NOTHING left of the tires when I get there! And I can't put together a set of "street" tires before this run. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif So I am really hoping we go for option #2 ATTICA.
Let's get this nailed down.

Here's what I'm planning for tires. For $300 you can get a set of used 90% or better Goodyears off a Hummer. These are Radial 37's. Add to that $40 for some cheap-o 16.5 steel rims from the salvage and you've got street tires. May not look that good, but for less than 4 bills, you've got street RADIALS to make the drive a little better. Rent a u-haul trailer for the swamps and you are good to go.
I'm saving coin to get some of the goodyears just for this purpose.

BTW, wasn't rying to be a punk, just hoping it would help. There ain't many ways I could make it to Attica anyway, I barely trust my rig to go 2 hours at a time right now. Still gotta get some stuff *fixed* first. I think it's just wicked you made it down to disney.

Thats kind of the same deal as me. My truck is not road worthy for a trip more than 6 hours right now. 200,000 mile motor will keep me close to the porch until I get the fresh one installed.

I know that feeling. Mine started acting sick after Disney. Finally blew a head gasket. I figure I got about 200k out of mine. Got the new motor sitting in there right now, just gotta finish up the wiring. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif
I'd love to make a run up farther north, but I really think I'd need a tow rig. If I don't have one, $1 bet says I'll need a tow TRUCK to get home.

How in the world have I missed this new forum!!
Potosi. I want to try that nice Wall again...except this time 3/4 ton and no lockers.
Attica would be nice, but limits on where we can go and what we can do. Plus don't forget the fees that are put on you for just going there.
Potosi is free, except for parts!!!

I got a set of 35's you could borrow to get there! Theyre on 16.5" 589's. There wore, but still got some tread left. I dont have the axles on yet so there just sitting at the shop. Depending on where and when, I may be interested in riding along if you got room and dont mind the company.

OK here is what happened. I broke off 3 diff cover bolts. Then I broke off 2 easy outs. Then I tried to drill out the easy outs and the drill bit walked and the holes are oblonged and off center so I cant tap them. Then all of the metal shavings went in to the carrier and pinion bearings....then I sprayed wheel cleaner in the diff instead of degreaser and it oxidized EVERYTHING. All of the new bearings, all of the shims...the R&P, everything...Its over for the D44, I look at this as a message, a message to get a D60. OK, I am sick now, I must go throw up

I think Jeff Lyons has a minimum order so we need an accurate count. Email me if you need one

So, those with shortbeds have no excuse to not be there! /forums/images/icons/smirk.gif Here is the lodging information I received from them as well:

A freind of mine picked up a dually front from Sam's Riverside a year and a half ago for $650. Don't know if that is there current price, or if they have any more. The real kicker is the same guy bought a complete 1977 tonner from a local plumber for $450. Sold it to another friend for $1100 because he wanted the well rig that was mounted to it. Of course he wanted the 60, too. He is going to put it under his 67 shortbox.
