View Full Version : 48 HOURS TO MOAB !!!

Not trying to create a panic, but that's how many days you have left to get ready for Moab. (Assuming that you are leaving on Wed 7/21 to arrive by Friday)
I've been ordering parts and planning my upgrades so that I should be ready to go when the big day gets here. I also am hoping to make a "shakedown run" either to Pismo, or Hollister to verify that the truck is solid before it starts it's 1000 mile trek! /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

What a relief... I have the "countdown" written on each day of my calendar. I was looking at the wrong week when I first posted this thread.....so we're actually at 33 days left today (7/19)
Having those extra 7 days helps.....but it's still gonna go QUICK!

Hella quick!
I am starting to write things down as I think of the "What do I have to do?" list!

Burt,
Yep definitely write a checklist and post it in the garage..... you'll go nuts trying to remember stuff when you are so excited about the trip.
Without a list, I think the only things I'd think to bring would be tequila, CDs, and gas money!!!! /forums/images/icons/grin.gif
Burt4x4
07-19-2002, 08:47 AM
hahahah No doubt!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif LOL
So have you figured out how/when your gonna hook up with the caravan? We can meet you anywere along the way? Heck you can even come to my house the night before or that moring? Sup to you. If you wanted you could even meet us in Vegas? Do you have anyone to travel out of the Gay Area with yet?
Greg72
07-19-2002, 08:57 AM
I haven't figured out the "hookup point" yet. Tuesday night (8/20) is when my vacation starts, so I am ready to leave EARLY Wednesday morning, or like you said, drive somewhere and meet up with the group the night before and catch a few ZZZZ's. I gotta believe there's got to be at least one or two other (ahem, BAY area) CK5'ers besides me....but if not, I'll swing over to your area to save time.
I really don't want to wait till Vegas to hook up with the caravan. Half the experience will be driving in a big pack of other K5s with our "MOAB OR BUST" stickers on, and sound of a few dozen sets of Swampers howling down the road!!!!
I am planning to have a CB installed before the trip too....so I can hear all the "YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAA's" as they happen!
Burt4x4
07-19-2002, 09:04 AM
Cool! Yup I too would like to have you with us before Vegas!
You are more than welcome to head over to my place the night before and crash out!
Would cut 1 1/2 hr off your day?
whatever works best for you is cool with me!

Hey, stop rubbing it in on how close BB is! Now I have to have a new transmission put in (GM replacement 700R4 took a dump after about 40k) and I still need my front 4.56's installed!!!! I will be cutting it close, but I will still go in 2wd if I have too!
BadDog
07-27-2002, 09:14 PM
Don't even start about cutting it close! :P
I've got to finish the cage, finish the floors, find and mount a gas tank, build a dash, find a spare (or tube), mount 4pt harnesses, mount shocks, and rig a rear hook point using my pintel hitch. And that's just the main stuff to get it "functional" for the trip. That still leaves building a front cap, adding tool boxes/storage compartments, and a million other things for after BB02. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif /forums/images/icons/ooo.gif
Greg72
07-27-2002, 11:21 PM
That's what great about an event like this.....
It FORCES me to do all the things that I was only "planning" to do someday. It was a frenzy of activity to get ready for BlazerFest in June, and now it's gonna be just as much effort to be ready for Moab.
The good news, is that after it's all over, I'll be running on 1-Ton axles, with lots of good safety and recovery gear. Kinda helps me to keep the promises I've been making to myself!!!!
/forums/images/icons/smile.gif
Greg72
07-29-2002, 08:13 AM
Made up a custom length MSD wire set, installed the new blaster coil, and I'm about 50% done building a front "recovery point".....see a pic here (http://coloradok5.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=548&size=big)
At this rate I will NOT be ready! Gotta pick up the pace..... /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

Those blocks should be metal before Moab.....I'll put it on my LIST.

Greg72
07-29-2002, 01:19 PM
Steve,
They're cheap pine....but fortunately, they are only to help suspend the bumper so I can "mock up" the hitch.
The bumpers look really goofy in their stock position, when the rest of the body is on a 2" body lift. Approach angles are not as good either.....
It'll all be good by Moab, you'll see....... /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

I can't begin to describe my disappointment.....
Last night Scott (4x4HIGH) helped me swap out my rocker arms/pushrods/guide plates because many of them were "welded" together!
The visual check with the engine running (valve covers off) shows that there is almost NO oil coming out of the pushrods. No wonder the parts were welding themselves together.
Ever get one of those "sinking feelings" that the news is about to get worse and worse? /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

Also Installed my new AGR 2WD steering box in preparation for x-over.
Started pulling the D60 apart, mostly to clean and paint, but I will probably do the 35-spine conversion while it's all apart anyway.....
The 454 "donor motor" arrives tonight. I'm hoping for a miracle there....no weird damage, ready to run!

Here's an update on my "new" engine for Moab:
I swear it was running when it was pulled out of a 77 Burban (http://coloradok5.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=764&size=big)
Can you say disappointed? Looks like we'll be rebuilding the 396 (aka 408) to give me a chance to drive my own rig to Moab...... /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

It is hard to believe it has been two years. I had just finished it a month before that run. I have since sold the trailer and purchased 37 inch MTR's. I actually enjoy driving it on the highway again. I will however drive across Kansas at night due to no insulation or a/c /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif . I have the rear suspension gutted and have started installing all the new components. I hope to have it driveable by next Monday.

Good luck, use the force and all that good stuff /forums/images/icons/grin.gif
Greg72
08-07-2002, 10:52 AM
Frizz,
The latest theory is that the oiling holes on the Comp Cams Roller rockers are misdrilled....got that info from an engine shop that has heard a few reports of it. If you compare a stock "stamped" rocker to a one of Comp's rollers, you'll see that the hole in the stock rocker is drilled at a noticable angle, and the Comp one is pure vertical. Also the offset in the pushrod pocket appears to be off too....!!!
Not sure if this is the answer, or it's a combination of that and a bunch of scored bearings bleeding off oil pressure from the top end.
And YES....unfortunately the ENTIRE list is going to be done before MOAB. That's not even all of it...that's just the parts I've ordered recently. I still have to mount and balance tires, cut fenders, fix a bent rear shock mount....install long travel Ranchos up front....etc.etc.etc..
I'm so screwed for time....I don't even want to think about it. /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

What you see is the tower supports for the 16 inch travel coilovers. The crossmember is dropped down in the middle to clear my spare tire which is removed in the picture. Actually removing the old suspension and plating the frame was the most difficult part of the whole thing. Just hope it works as well as it does in the drawings. Should know soon. About all I can do is paint the block and heads while I wait.
I did get my Borgeson steering shaft from UPS last night, so that got installed and it looks nice. Today (Sat) should be a Dana60 day....I have lots of parts for the rebuild and I need to clean and paint the housing.
Ideally, I could have it all put back together and under the truck by early next week.... still waiting on Locking Hubs and New Spindles!

Cool I will still bring them just in case you don't get the hubs and you never know how will need some help. As far as the U-joints yep they are huge. The inners did you get the newer style that does not neck down or did you use the old ones that neck down. If you use the old style that necks down then that will be your weak link and you don't want to break an inner shaft because all that metal could get in your diff. and that would suck buy not as bad as needing to remove the diff. to get the shaft out of the locker. Hey boss man I'am not telling you any thing but just giving you my two cent. Please don't spend it because it is all I have. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

That sadistic UPS driver......!!!
I was working out in the "man space" and the dog started barking a little, so I put down everything I was doing to go check if someone was out front. I got there just in time to see the UPS truck pull away from the curb.....
So I'm like "Cool, my parts must be here!" I walk to the front door, and the only thing there is one of those damn YOU MUST SIGN FOR THE PACKAGE, WE'LL COME BY TOMORROW slips hanging on the door.!!!!! /forums/images/icons/mad.gif
So I race inside, and grab my keys and try to figure out which way he must have gone, and I drive out into the neighborhood with my UPS slip (now covered in greasy fingerprints) trying to locate that damn brown truck!!!! NO LUCK....those guys drive just as fast as I do.
So my hubs and D60 spindles spent another night in some warehouse instead of getting installed on my axle....

Yeah he's got my parts alright....! THE WRONG PARTS!!!! /forums/images/icons/mad.gif
It's lucky for Boyce Equipment that they were already closed when my order arrived....Mark would have gotten an earful!!!!
Instead of my D60 spindles, and a set of Warn Premium 35-Spline hubs........I got D60 spindles, a D60 Ring & Pinion Gearset (7.13 ratio), and D60 cover gasket, and buttload of gaskets, and bushings, and bearings......an NO WARN HUBS!!!
So now I can get my axle most of the way together, but I have NO way to lock the hubs, and I'm back to square one locating those 35-Spline Warns!!!!
I will drive almost anywhere locally to get a set of Warn 62672's? Or pay for overnight shipping to get them here in time for Moab!
Can SOMEONE here help me?!!!!!!

Holy SH!TBalls! THat sucks!
Keep looking your bound to find someone with them?
WHat about the parts the D60 came with? Are they usable?
GOOD LUCK! Lemmy know if anything I can do to help!
Greg72
08-15-2002, 08:53 AM
Burt,
The axle came with 30-spline outers (I think they all do?) and the lockouts were incomplete....no ringtooth thingies under the lockouts to actually engage the stub shaft to the wheel!!!
So it's ALL-OR-NOTHING on these hubs....I suppose I could tape a Ziploc bag over each side, and drive to Moab with no lockouts, and hope that someone could bring me what I need for installation AT MOAB!!!??? /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

If ya dont get the 60 together could ya put the 44 back in?
Greg72
08-15-2002, 09:15 AM
NOPE....
The 44 is part of the deal that helps 4x4HIGH get his D60....and the 4WD steering box is already installed in RyanB's truck.
The only direction is "forward" now......!!! No going back.

I had an "unsavory" experience with Mark Boyce yesterday, so I don't think I'll be using Boyce Equipment EVER AGAIN....! /forums/images/icons/mad.gif
Well, it's a "Good News / Bad News" story for me......
GOOD NEWS:
I'll be able to work on my K5 every day, ALL day from now until the departure to Moab.....because:
BAD NEWS:
I'm out of work AGAIN! /forums/images/icons/frown.gif Seems the parent company doesn't want anything to do with our division, and just liquidated the entire organization yesterday. All employees are gone, and they are selling off the equipment and intellectual property to whoever wants it.
This really sucks. I was unemployed for almost a full year, and had only been at this new company for 3 months....just starting to get back on my feet financially, and trying to get out of debt. Looks like I'll have to start all over again.
At least Moab will be a nice "break"....and a chance to bond with some great folks before starting the job search all over again.

Three Days to go and.............
IT"S ALIVE!!!!!
Started up the new engine last night for the first time about 9pm (the neighbors loved us! /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif ) and it looks like we have good oil pressure at the top of the engine this time!!
The front clip is re-installed, so it looks like a truck again, and I feel like it's coming together nicely. But there is still quite a bit to do:
Install new tires on wheels....can't drive to Moab on 29" tires!
Get 14BFF Re-geared for 4.10s to match front D60
Finish installing brake lines on D60
Install F*RD shock towers on front to hold 9012 Ranchos
Install CB
Install Front Recovery Point, and Bumper
Trim Fenders (ALL)
Create a rear recovery point if time allows...
I'm sure there's more to do, but the MAJOR stuff on the list (that HAS to be completed) is almost all done now. I still have all day today (Sunday) and all day tomorrow, and probably 1/2 day on Tuesday to resolve any last-minute bugs.
