Is there anything in this line of products that gets better range? I can't talk to people 12 blocks away! But no one will get a cb radio...and also can I modify my talkabout? Thanks

you'd have to go for your HAM license, first step and you can get 2 meter handhelds and talk really far. if not then you're outta luck, those "talkabout" styles are just like handheld CB's, very low power. doubt if you can "tweek and peak" one like you can a moble CB...

Fyi, I am a technician in a manufacturing environment and we make cordless telephones. Well they say the our phones are good up to 1000 feet. Which would be the equivelant to 3 + football fields. Well mine won't even go around the apartment building where I live. I found out that we (and other companies), go to an empty field where nothing is around and do the field range testing. Basically a straight line. I am sure that is how the range of your talkabout was tested. - Steve

talk abouts are advertised as a two mile radio but u usally get 1mile a watt and they are 1 watt radios . now mountain top to mountain top you may et more range but that is not reality. fcc made them make the antenna non removable and the power if turned up the very little it will go will just drain the batteries rapidly . they are what they are .

I saw a new FRS radio in the bass pro shops catalog that boasts a 5 mile range as opposed to the standard 2. The thing is big though and I seem to remember it costing close to $180...
