View Full Version : What channel yall chill on?
I know the national channel is 19, emergency is 9, and I think the national 4 wheelin channel is 4. What channel do yall usually run when ridin on the trails? Here back home on local mud holes and stuff like that, me and my buddies talk on channel 3. Just wondering what everyone else does.

Most of us have talkabouts . If that doesnt do anything we have the Nextel phones that have the Builders network. Mostly its just a convience thing, our CBs are normally set to 4. We listen for the Jeeps, Fords, and Mopars that get stuck on the trails with the CBs.

Me and the guys I wheel with usually do a channel of the day thing before we go out, check all the channels and go with the clearest one, not in use. But the rest of the time its on 19
When the mud gets deep and the hills get steep we'll find out who bought the parts that were cheap.
we use 37 lower side band

Hey Nashu, what is an average range for a CB? Or is that too vague a question? It seems that I 'get out' about 2-3 miles, is that about right?

[b]Just depends on where you are and what kind of crap is in the air. But about avereage I would say is 2 to 3 miles. It also depends on how much power your set up has and how good of an antenna. I had my cb peaked and tuned so it is putting out a solid 20 watts, it peaks at about 30. I also run 1 full length whip and my swrs are flat as a pancake. I talk very very very well out on the trails. But to tell you the truth I know very little about CB stuff. I used to work at a shop that specialized in CB but that was 6 years ago. See YA, Have A Nice Day!!!

Well I'm using a cheap little CB, Maxon I think, (Christmas present) and 2 4' whips mounted on my mirrors. I have no idea what SWR even means but I can guarantee mine aren't flat as a pancakehttp://www.coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/laugh.gif
Thanks man!

I usually chill on channel 19 when I'm alone.
When I'm talking to my dad or a friend, we just use whatever channel's the cleanest (usually 21 or 23).

WITH ALL THE CRAP FROM THE 11 YEAR CYCLE, IT'S HARD TO DO ANY TALKING DURING THE DAY. A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN THE AIR WAYS WAS CLEAR, I COULD USELY TALK 20+ MILES WITHOUT A LINAR. TALKED ALL OVER THE WORLD WHEN THE SKIP WOULD ROLL IN.

my cb is usually on channel 2, because it has the least traffic on it.

Depends on where I'm talking to. Here in central CA it is just a giant valley so I can go into the mountains and park above the valley and carry about 75 miles straight out. In our area N/S bound are 17, E/W are 19, locals usually on 12, 10, and 7, spanich on 35, 1, and 4. Trail is whatever everybody agrees on.

On 27.475 mhz and other "freeband" frequencies, I routinely talk all over, with just a Wilson 5000 mobile antenna and 35w output on my radio. Farthest I've ever talked to so far has been the UK... Not too bad considering conditions in Michigan generally suck.
When the skip is rolling in, your ability to talk locally is diminished on the CB freq's since there's tons of crap going on on them. When the skip is gone for various reasons I've talked 20 miles from my mobile to mobile 10-20 miles without much trouble...
All depends on your conditions...
SWR is a measure of the ratio of radiated signal vs reflected. 1:1 is optimal, but 1.5:1 is nothing to worry about. Having an SWR too high without an antenna tuner (amateur radio type equipment) it can negatively affect your radio and the performance of the radio...

For the skip we park right above the lake (Millerton) and can sort of aim it by skipping off the lake and then the atmosphere, just depends where you park on the lake.
