It has been brought to my attention that there are a few of us who need to get out and wheel. You remember last year - sub zero camping; waking up with frost on the tent (and toes). Well, 'tis that time of year folks! Lets all get together for the Fall Run in Potosi, Missouri. The date is planned for October 25-27th. So, bring your tent and your rig, plus the will to tough out the cold. There are Hotels in Potosi for those who can't handle the chill.

This gives me a new goal to reach. I have a month to get my K5 with Doubler and 1 Ton drivetrain. I said it before "I will not plan an event until... blah blah blah..." See ya there.

Hehehehehe... let the clock start ticking! (AGIAN!) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif /forums/images/icons/wink.gif I too have a small list of mods I would LIKE to have done which include:

1. new shocks, relocated in the rear, and Ferd towers in the front
2. front welded (not enough $$$ for a locking-device)
3. new rear CV drive shaft... this one takes precidence
4. get that spare TIRE mounted on a rim... /forums/images/icons/smile.gif /forums/images/icons/blush.gif

And thats just the stuff I can think of right now! Good luck with your mods Neil... hope everything pans out for you this time.

I have very few items that I need to address before the Fall Run. I'll install the Moser chromoly shafts, the Dana 44 Detroit (thanks Neil), and if the money tree sprouts about $300....a set of CTM u-joints. Oh yeah, I need to install a new set of locking hubs and remove the fusible hub pieces.
Also, the "push bars" on the rock sliders should be done by then as well.
That should do it.
I can't wait.
I didn't get my fill.......

this sounds great me and my brother planned a ride at Palmer that weekend with some locals from the area and a jeep club from Ill. there will even be a couple of scout guys down that weekend, most of these guys are from potosi and farmington. i was going to be the only chevy there (just a little fun rilvary between me and my bro he wheels a ferd bronco) most of these guys all drive 78 or 79 ford broncos, we are camping in the camp ground and there will be me and 3 friends in their broncos who would love to join you guys on the trails wont have my crossover or hydro steering done but will bring it out anyway had it there labor day weekend and broke a leaf spring pin and bent my drag link in a big crack on one of the trails hope to see ya all there

Do I get this feeling Neil missed getting all broken at Attica? Now I have to get a goal to get some tires and get my other things fixed by Oct!!!
Now I can check out this 3/4 ton stuff and find my weak link!!!

Nick,

WARNING: AVOID ALL AREAS COVERED WITH WATER. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THROUGH THESE AREAS AS HYDROLOCKING MAY OCCUR!! j/k

Hope to see ya there.

Well, yer gonna "bring me the cable" if I get stuck, ain't ya!?!?!?! I might suggest you stay away from ditches that flex your rig out. Don't wanna hear any body mounts breaking or fans eating radiators!!

I plan on sealing everything. I bought out the auto part stores on black gasket maker.
Really funny when I watched the tranny shop attempt to get the cover off to adjust my TV cable!! The guys coworkers were laughing at him calling him "weak" that he couldn't pull a simple air cover off!!!!

Was this where you made it up the hill that "no stock truck has done before"? I do remember the pics of your truck under water, i think it was you. Hmmmm, maybe i can make this one......... where in the heck is potosi???

OFFRDK5
09-19-2002, 11:11 PM
Yep, the pics are in my sig. There is just one thing that you have to do before you are allowed to attempt this "hill". You have to cross the lake and then turn around and come back and have the rig live to tell the tail. And maybe the next day jump start a Ferd truck, with no air breather, at, oh what would you say Neil? 6 AM? I will toss you a life vestfor the lake!!!

In addition to Todd's statement...

Do not attempt any large mud holes at high speed. And when the vehicle becomes inoperable, you WILL fetch the winch cable...
j/k too.

At least you know what to to next time the you hydrolock the diesel /forums/images/icons/smile.gif Clint and I still talk about that one from time to time. First time we ever saw a diesel hydrolocked....

Actually, Todd didn't have the "WTF look", he didn't even know it happened! That's what happens when you listen to that devil music while on the trail. /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif The funny thing is what he said after getting out of the truck. "Suspension that works" - I've heard that a few times before.

That's the only rockcrawlin rig with more money in the sterio than invested in the drivetrain!

Now, on to matters at hand. Nick, it was quite funny to see how excited you were about making it to the top of the Wall. Something like "...3.08 GEARS... NO LOCKERS... AND STOCK SUSPENSION...." I sure wish we had that on tape! Just to give you guys an idea, his voice sounded a little like Chris Farley when he would get wound up! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Glad to see we will have some of the Old Group with us this time. I believe Scooter is planning on being here too. Not too sure about Frisbie, Oberto or Brown at this time.

All I know is point me up the middle line on "The Wall" and get out of the way because Im hammering it all the way to the top!

Potosi is by far one of the funnest places to play for all types of vehicles. Many opportunities to test your suspension, water fording /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif and ability to brave the cold.

I am going to do the Wall again. Just this time I am going to listen to the spotter better. "Turn the wheel all the way to the right."
I also need to get me an air mattress and figure a way out to get my stuff organized so i can crash in the back. And if I catch anyone shining a million candlewatt light in my Blazer and saying something like "Well, we thought you died cuz you left it running!" we will have to dig some lights out of some asses!!

BTW, I just talked to Bryan Walsh and hes gonna try his best to be there.
I hope we have a good turn out this time.

Hey Tyler, was that comment meant for me? /forums/images/icons/smirk.gif

Ok, I will be there fer sure.

Todd - Detroit? What Detroit? I sold that thing a long time ago! You better get o'er here and pick it up before the wood ratz (raccoon's) get ahold of it. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

Nick - No comment - you either are here in person to see Tyler go up the Middle Line of the Wall or you can see the pictures!

I am pretty excited about getting back to Potosi. It is such a blast down there. I have many trails we haven't hit on previous runs, so prepare for a new show. We will probably hit the Wall as usual an the Behind Hazel Creek Loop like before. I think Todd probably wants to test the body mounts on the Wedgie on Barn Trail and I definately want to check out The Great Divide again.

About Camping. I know of a primitive spot back on a trail which we could camp at. It is near one of the lakes - would any of you want to camp there? Just a change in scenery - plus you have to use 4wd to get there! I have camped there before and left my tent all weekend without problems. The locals from Deliverance are usually all hunkered around a Meth Lab about this time of year so we shouldnt have problems with them.

Todd is going to try his Toilet plunge again this year - new swampers and lockers should get him out of the pit! I guess, Ill give it a whirl too. Those who make it through pit one, go on to pit two! (bathing suits optional). Dan is in for a treat at Potosi - with any luck, he might meet a local or two. Be sure to bring a camera for those pics you want to take home to Mom.

Tyler-

God willing, I will be there. I need to beat my rig into submission if I will have to drive it there... between the DW and the rear axle problem you witnessed, its hardly streetable right now. I hope to have a tow rig in the next two weeks... which would prevent me from having to fix these issues.

But rest assured, I will do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to be there with a smile on my face! /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

That was a good one! (inside joke)

Nick, you better make this one! Oh wait - I better make this one! /forums/images/icons/grin.gif This trip is "No Holds Barred", meaning anyone who wants to drive into a bottomless pit can do so on their own power - just remember getting home after the weekend is your own priority. /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif

The shop floor concrete is curing as we speak. I should be able to pull the K5 into the shop this weekend and get my @$$ to work. I am perty damned excited about this trip. Camping in Potosi has to be one of the funnest times I've had.

OFFRDK5
09-25-2002, 03:43 PM
You have to wait for concrete to start working on your rig? A nice grassy field or a large slop of mud works for me!!

Mudzer
09-26-2002, 09:16 AM
Uh - I've got a little more than an oil change to do! A doubler setup gets a little whobbley when on a tranny jack in the grass. /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

I have done my share of parking lot wrenching - its time to step up and use convenience when I can.

KRAZIE87K5
09-26-2002, 12:10 PM
Agreed - I wouldnt want to try a tranny jack in the grass... EXPECIALLY loaded up with a nice new shiney doubler! /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

Okay, so I still need to get 2 new tires, one moved to the spare. Then I need to replace the shocks with 5012s, install the Ferd towers, and relocate the rear axle mounts. After that, I need to service the front axle install a longer breather tube, weld the spiders, and replace any leaky seals when its all over. NOT TO MENTION, I STILL NEED TO BUY MY TOW RIG! /forums/images/icons/tongue.gif How long before this trip happens? Yikes...

But not to worry, I will be there. I can't miss any trips now that I know the blast I will have with Todd and Tyler around a camp fire! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif /forums/images/icons/grin.gif

Cool Man, enjoy the hum! I have driven many miles on Boggers. So you have said tires in your possession?

Going on Tuesday to pick up the 1 ton!

BlueBlazer62
09-26-2002, 11:56 PM
Think I could hitch a ride from you on this run Dan. I seem to have "ventilated" my block yesterday, just got it apart today, thought it was a head gasket, but it was a broken piston and then the con. rod hit the block and cracked it pretty good. Anyway, the Blazer is now going down for the winter and spring to get some MAJOR changes. Ill take some pics of the busted parts if you guys want.

OFFRDK5
09-27-2002, 01:55 AM
What happened Tyler? You blew your engine apart? What in the world were you doing to destroy a Diesel? Hope you can get it up and going soon. If you want I will have a passenger seat, unless Matt goes or I get my neighbor to go. Gonna rip out the back seat tomorrow.

OFFRDK5
09-27-2002, 01:59 AM
Lots of humming Mudzer. I just think they might need balanced. At about 60 I can't hold onto the stering wheel. I am wondering if it because they sat for a bit. Did you ever have any problem of leaving them sit for a bit and then they come out different? I just love the tires!!

KRAZIE87K5
09-27-2002, 09:59 AM
Tyler-

One way or another, I can find you a seat. I HOPE to have a crewcab dually for the trip, but that hasn't been set in stone yet. Regardless, I don't have a confirmation from Kevin yet as to whether or not he can make it but there is always the rear bench if everything else fails. I will get you in my truck somehow, okay? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

-Dan

Mudzer
09-27-2002, 12:14 PM
That bites Tyler! Well, now you have to move you new motor install to sooner than later! I will have a full truck this trip with 4 passengers. If you make it down, I am sure you can find a passenger seat somewhere.

Nick,

Your Boggers will get flat spots from sitting over night so sitting for a while will have similar results. The hum I talk about is the sound of the tires on the highway. Sounds like a low flying helicoptor.

mudduck
09-27-2002, 01:51 PM
I will have an open seat in my shortbed if needed, and was down there labor day weekend and the toilet or bottomless pit is even deeper than last year. so beware it claimed two motors and a rear diff that weekend the first hole is doable i made it thru that one but the second i wouldnt even try it with out 8" lift or more and at least 39s i put my front in and didnt even get shortbed all the way in the hole and had water cover my whole front up to almost middle of my hood my bro got in the hole and you couldnt even see the tops of his 38 tsls once in he went no where fast and he is running or was running a built 460 ferd in his bronco but it should be a good time hazel loop trail has a lot of mud on it.

BlueBlazer62
09-27-2002, 05:57 PM
Its not that hard to destroy a 6.2, theyre arent exactly a marvel of modern engineering. I was loping down the highway about 60 when the piston let go and then the connecting rod proceeded to beat the living hell out of the cylinder wall. Lets just say thats that first and last turd of a 6.2 I will ever own. Only real diesels from here on out.

OFFRDK5
09-27-2002, 06:36 PM
Neil - But on "take off" they sound like a propellered airplane.

Anyone got a spare 33 bogger they aren't using?

thebigdaddyof2
09-27-2002, 11:45 PM
Dude, that sucks. Maybe it's time to junk the diesel and go with a gas motor.
Maybe even a BBC?
Hope to see ya there.

BlueBlazer62
09-28-2002, 03:57 PM
DUDE, the fact that its a diesel was not the problem, it was the fact that its a 6.2 diesel. Diesels are and always will be the best form of a internal combustion engine, its just that this particular one is not that great. Its going to get a diesel still, just not a 6.2. Oh yeah, if it was going to go gas, it would HAVE to be a caddy 500, from what Ive heard, those things rock.

thebigdaddyof2
09-28-2002, 11:11 PM
Easy there, big fella....everyone's got an opinion and that's OK. If you really wanted a caddy motor, Shagz and I went to the yard today and easily passed up over a dozen caddys with motors in tact. Call me or shoot me a PM if you really do want one. I scored a truck tail gate and a spare 2WD sector shaft. Shagz scored a York F210 compressor and a 14BFF 4.10 gear set. later.

BlueBlazer62
09-29-2002, 03:18 AM
I was messing with ya since you always give me a hard time about the diesel thing, I dont want a caddy motor, I was just saying if I was to go gas thats what Id get.

I would really like to it just depends on if I can get my truck fixed in time.(new axles and tires on and the frame fixed is mandatory, crossover is a maybe if time and $$$ allows).

I have to pick up the front axle from Neil and the rear axle from Nebraska. Then I need to grind the calipers to fit the 15's. It all depends on when I can get the axle from Nebraska. Im hopeing to get it next weekend. If so Ill have a whole week to weld on perches and get the axles installed. I should know the weekend before the trip if Ill make it.

Where are you guys gonna meet at? Im living in Springfield, IL now. Looks like Ill be going down I55.

Neil, can the campgrounds be reserved or is it "first come, first serve"?

Mudzer
10-09-2002, 08:17 AM
Awww. I was only kidding! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Todd, the campground is first come first served. Remember this is a donation type campground - they expect us to drop $6 per day in the pay slot. It will not be booked up that weekend I can almost assure you. Do we want our same camp spot as always? Pam and I are leaving at Noon on Friday. I guess we need to start thinking about carpooling, meeting times and such. Is there anyone who needs directions? I typically meet up with Tyler and Nick in St. Louis, but this year I will be taking a different route. I can meet people at the campground. If you have a tent warmer, you better bring it!

Frisbie, that was baaaad. You are correct however, the Wall only gets tougher after every rain and we had a bunch this summer. I havent been there for nearly a year! Should be fun time, you may want to try to make it.

KRAZIE87K5
10-09-2002, 02:19 PM
I'm meeting up with Tyler... since he needs to catch a ride with me. I may even be picking him up right from his door step! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Then the two of us will run back out to the meeting spot... where ever it may be. Sound like a plan?

And on the wall... the only advantage I see that you have is the winch to keep from going over! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif I have yet to pick up the front of the truck... so this should be fun! Problem being (as Todd will tell) I usually like to attack obstacles with the skinny pedal. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I think this one may take a little more finesse than I am used to! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Guess I will need to get that hand throttle installed too! /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

One word to the wise on the Wall. You will want to take it easy going up. We got several Blazers very Tippy last time up. When you are sitting in the middle line with front tires atop the ledge, it appears you are climbing to the Moon. All you see is air. The left front ALWAYS gets from 3 to 5 foot of air depending on how hard you drive it. I have never taken a winch cable up it yet. I would say nobody has a distinct advantage over this obstical. Many have claimed to have been all over the US and have never driven up anything this wild. The one apparent problem with the Wall, if you ever get the rear tires over the ledge and decide to go backwards - You are in for about a 3 time over end roll which is sure to make your weekend suck! That will Jar your Preserves!

The Wall is constantly changing for the worse. It will eventually be undoable when the erosion takes over. Cant wait to try it again.

I will start viewing maps this week to check our trail route. I will try to keep us on trails the whole weekend and eliminate any rock road travel!

On my 1 ton swap - I am going to get the axles installed this weekend. I have ordered everything but the Locker for the D60. Debating on a Detroit or just a drop in. Cant wait to play!

Progress Note:

14 Bolt is now installed with Disk Brakes. The truck is sitting on all fours now! I mounted one of the beadlocks and it looks like it will work really well. Now I need to install the rest of the brake lines, weld the steering box frame repair kit, bleed brakes and steering system, mount tires, and connect the driveshafts!

3 nights of Wrenching left! Oh, I also wanted to install my D60 Detroit! Geez, I have a bunch to do. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

outlaw612
10-22-2002, 11:03 AM
HAHA! Just wait till you try to install the weld on steering brace. I did mine last night and it took a torch(to enlarge the bolt holes since they dont line up), a welder(for the obvious), and a 3lb hammer to make it fit the frame. Good luck, if your brace is anything like mine youre gonna need a lot of luck. Took me about 3 hours just for the plate on the side of the frame!

On a better note, I got the front axle installed. Just have to torque the balljoints and install the hubs.

On a lower note, I just got off the phone with Rockstomper. I ordered my draglink 1 1/2 weeks ago and still dont have it. I was told "Well, it looks like it shipped, but I dont know when." So hopefully I will get my draglink today or tomorrow or I wont be driving to Potosi /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Directions to Potosi

From Illinois: (you St. Louisans should know your way!)

Take I55/I70 across the Mississippi River into St. Louis. Continue South on I55 past Arnold going towards Cape Girardeau. Turn (right) onto Highway 67 South near Festus - Exit 175. Drive South on Highway 67 to Desloge. Turn (right) onto Business 67 and continue through town. Turn West (right) on Highway 8 towards Potosi. Follow Highway 8 - 12 miles to Potosi. You will cross Highway 21 just as you enter Potosi. Just after crossing Highway 21, look for Highway P going to the South. Turn South (left) onto Highway P and drive approximately 12 miles of curvy, hilly road. Be cautious, there are several sharp corners on downhill slopes. Highway P ends at Highway C. Turn West (right) onto Highway C and continue for 3.5 miles to Highway Z. This Highway goes uphill (right) from Highway C. Continue on Highway Z - after 1.5 miles the road turns into gravel. Continue straight on CR 657 approximately one mile of gravel road to FS Road 2392 turning to the South (left). You will see the Hazel Creek Campground sign at the entrance to this road.

We will probably want to pick a site big enough for approximately 8 good sized tents and all of our rigs. I typically pick the spot near the sign island. This is close to the Vault's for us and close enough so Nick can wash his boots after getting swamped!

See you all there.

Thanks for the directions Neil. I'll probably be getting there around 9ish... since Tyler can't get out of work on Friday. I'll be picking him up around 4:30pm, then running a few little errands, and then heading to camp.

So far, the front axle is nearly assembled, and the lock right is installed. I was working on it till 12:15am this morning! I just need to install the diff cover, and fill her with fluids. Then tonight GeneralBlueBalls (Bryan) is coming over with his Miller welder to relocate my rear shock mounts on the 14BFF. The Ferd towers will go in shortly thereafter, and finally the 5012's will be installed. Then all thats left is to install the yoke and drive shaft in camp on Friday night! Damn... thats still a lot of work! /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

UPDATE FROM MY DRIVE WAY:

Bryan AKA: GeneralBlueBalls, welding in my slightly modified mounts to the 14BFF!
http://12.248.132.67/images/truck/rearshocks/welding.gif

Last night went well too! Got the rear shocks installed, even though they have very little up travel (something like 4.5") but they are in. The front diff cover is sealed and curing. Then the front Ferd mounts... I got one mounted last night with the shock, and plan to finish up with the other side tonight. Then I will slap fluid in the front diff, install the old drive shaft for the time being, and take her for a test drive! Can't wait to see if she behaves better now! Remember I had MAD DW and the rear axle jumping on the highway before these mods... I hope the thing rides like a Caddy now! LMAO! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
