CK5 - The Full-Size GM Off Road Community

I need some ideas on what kind of antenna to get and where to mount it. Right now I am running a Uniden PC76XLW CB with no mods, but I do plan on having it 'tweaked and peaked' somewhere down the road. I am trying to stay away from roof mounting since the truck is kept in a garage and I dont want to knock it off every time I pull in or out. This may sound stupid but I was thinking about getting a K-40 trunk lip mount antenna and mounting it up either on the edge of the hood or the cowl panel. Would this location work? I've been in the same spot and I couldnt get my lip mount to work at all. First off though, your radio is perfect the way it is. All tuning it up will do is shorten its life, aligning will not. An alignment just simply sets it to ensure it is running on frequency. It takes 10 times the power to raise your signal 1 pound, so why bother. One of the best spots for a fiberglass antenna though (better performance than a metal whip) is between the fender and hood. You can buy a simple bolt on mount to install it and use a three foot antenna, anything else is too big. You can also drill through your bumper and mount the best performing antenna of them all, 102" whip (I wouldnt drill into my bumper though, but hey to each his own). The mirror mounts can work too but arent the greatest, the hood mount gives a better ground and has a more secure mount.

Keep in mind that the 102 inch whip will be whacking the top of your rig alot when you go off road. http://www.coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/frown.gif I removed my 102 inch and replaced it with a 3 foot fiberglass antenna. Mine's mounted to a ball mount near the top of the right rear fender. Drilling the holes to mount it takes some intestinal fortitude!!! http://www.coloradok5.com/forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Thanks for the help guys. I guess I wont be getting it tweaked, but I will look into getting it aligned. I think I will go with the bolt mount through the hood. Thanks again.

The 102" would be pretty wicked on a rough trail. It'll perform like no other but you'd have to tie it down and choke your performance. I had the K40 whip on my '81 and it hit every tree in town. I like the three footer though, doesn't get in the way and won't cause problems.

They have some wicked radios on there. They recommend and I do too to get the actual export radios. They are designed to run with the higher wattage, radios ment for the US are designed to work at 4 watts (12 watts sideband). You'll still need a lot of wattage to get out far and in that case and amp would give you more power. The only problem with an amp is that you need to get your radio tuned down so its not over-driving the amp. The feature thats nicer than slighter more output range is the frequency flexibilty, you can go on frequencies other people won't have. Just be careful, its illegal to run export radios in the U.S.
