will post up more tonight, we basically used the blazer sub frame and used 2x2 at an angle to support it..beefy, I still cant beleave I am cutting it up already, I want to narrow the front next by removing the front fender's inner support and leaving just the skin, then make some stress notches and bend them in and follow the inner hood lines...I can't wait /forums/images/graemlins/pimp.gif

I guess now you know why so many people say not to put so much work/money into the body and paint job /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Living in the the NW I think it would be cool to see something with functional doors, /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif since its is cold and wet more than it is dry and sunny....I guess that makes me a poser though /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

dude, do a super-detailed write up on this and get Steve to post it to the permenent tech article section... that'd rock! Im not gonna boatside my k5... but I am definitely gonna do it to the s-10 cab. Still, its the same principle and yours turned out awesome. share that tech info!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Its funny that for all the tech that is in the technical section, people are constantly asking questions that have been answered there already. Instead of do a search, we should tell more people to look in the tech section /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hmmm, looks a bit familiar. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
But I don't know that we need a write up. Most of the info was covered in the recent Boat Side thread. And there is really no "right" way to do it, it's totally a matter of taste and preference combined with goals...
Those of you that want more pics can see the pics of my son's boat side project here. (http://www.members.cox.net/jameshuffman/phase1/rebuild.html)

I need to read the thread and I need pics of what was cut off if you could. My floorboards and rockers aren't in the greatest condition. They look good on the outside but are actually rotted out so I want to boatside it.

His floors were rotted too, that's why we cut out as much as we did (see pics). It came out in pieces, and the pieces have been tossed some time ago, so sorry, no pics of what came out. But seriously, if you have the skills to do the fab, you have the skills to see how it can be made to fit in like my pics (and SuperSize) show. Get under there and look at it and I think you'll agree. It's just not that hard... I'm completely burried right now, but I'll try to find time to annotate the pics in BadPup's page ASAP.

yeah I'm already picturing it in my head. I won't cut out as much or go up as far I don't think. Will start looking and maybe working tomorrow. need to locate some square tube.

Eli (Weisel) did his boatside that high or higher and he still has functional doors. It can be done, but it all depends on how much time you are willing to spend getting the doors to work. I think he said he had 40hr or so in work to get his doors to work with his very high boatside job.

I'm sure I will have functional doors, I won't go as high as some of you guys. Just as high as the top of the standard rocker panel maybe slightly more.

I think a write up would still be a good deal with lots o pics...doesn't mean anyone has to do it just like that...but the pics and thoughts involved make very rich food for thought...

I like the idea of a pictorial artical of peoples' boatsided rigs. Restating what baddog wrote, if you have the skills to do the mod, the pictures are enough, because everyone has a different idea of exactly how they want it.
Harly, your right, it did take me 40+ hours for my boatside and modified doors, and I think I have one of the highest raised rocker pannels (Andrew's are higher) and still have functioning doors. I don't say this to toot my own horn, just to let people know that they can do the same.

Hey Russ,
While you are annotating, can you take a measurement from the body line down to the top of the new rocker tube?
Did any of you plan on using doors with operable windows? I thought about keeping the doors and having a set of "half" doors and "not so half doors". I havent measured to the bottom of the window bumpstop yet, so if someone has it might help. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

<font color="blue">Well, that WAS a nice tub /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif. You desert guys dont know how great you have it. Nice job on the boatsides though, but one question- on such a heavy rig, why did you use such thin plate? (looks like 1/8 or 3/16 from here).
supersize75
10-17-2003, 04:22 PM
the plate wasn't really designed for the load bearing part, the rocker is, but I have lifted it up on the plate part and it held the truck up /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

How much can you cut off the bottom of the door and still be able to use the doors WITH windows?
6.2Blazer
12-16-2004, 12:08 PM
You will have to modify or move the lower door hinge before you start having issues with the windows.........assuming you have manual windows (power window motors hang down about the same distance as the bottom of the hinge bracket on the door).
I'll try to get some measurements off mine and see how much more room there is between where I already cut the doors and the bottom of the window when rolled down.
four_by_ken
12-16-2004, 12:11 PM
I have power winders.
6.2Blazer
12-17-2004, 09:53 AM
With the power windows you will be able to cut them almost to the bottom of the hinge bracket.....maybe 1/2" below. My doors were still power when I cut them, and then I switched them over to manual afterwards.........it's damn easy to switch out regulators when the bottom of the door is cut out......

Bringing this one back from the dead....
Shawn, how high up from the floorpan did you cut? Looks like you cut above your lower door hinge.
Not sure if I want to cut that high up but I probably will cut at the bottom of the lower hinge and tie in the rocksliders from there. This way I don't have to go back and redo it again when I go truggy in the future.
supersize75k5
10-25-2007, 07:56 PM
On one of the trucks I went to the bottom of the hinge, on the other I moved the hinge up. since you plan on tube doors anyways either way will work.
one thing to keep in mind, if you with to later on truggy it, you can gain 4 inches off each side if you flip your rocker. What I mean by that is simply moveing the rocker in 4 inches and cuting out the metal where the hinges were and wher the front fender mounts are. whan I did that I made the rig about 9 inches narrower:eek1:
things to keep in mind, are you caguing to your frame? if you plan to just make your rig solid mount since you have a daily driver now thats something to take into thought when you weld up the boat siding. look over russ's k-30 pics and build as well, lots of great pics.
BadAss90K5
10-25-2007, 08:24 PM
Thanks Shawn. Narrowing in the rockers is something I'll have to consider though.. I'll definitely tie the cage to the frame so I'm asking the questions and decide how I should build my rig.
I'm thinking very far ahead..... do boatsiding while the sliders are in process, cage the K5 in such a way, if I were to narrow the front and rear and ditch the sheetmetal, cage is still usable and no changes need to be made. I guess it's like I have a truggy inside the Blazer :D Am I making any sense here?:dunno:

Stephens ORD rig "Wally" progressed just like you are talking. The original front part of the cage was built inside of the Blazer body. Through the years more and more body left the outside revealing the cage. It's a long and winding road but does work well. His rig took about 10 years to fully progress from a blazer with 33" tires to what it is now.

ive had many chevs in the past but i just bought a 79 k10 that i put a 6 inch with some 35x1350x15 toyos and want to make it into more or a wheeling truck and like the idea of boatsiding to get more clearence. Ive been researching boatinding for ideas for a couple weeks but am still lose. Shoud i remove the body mount when i boatside it or leave it? I was planing on cuttint about 6 inches cause the cab is rusting out and then cuttting it at mor of an angle at the rear of the cab and cutting the doors at an angle. Then i was going to move the rear axle forward and cutting the frame and building a flat bed so with that said how hard is it to put a blazer gas take in to replace my dual tanks i have now? Any info or pics would help caue im starting to cut the body up mext weekend

leave the body mount, start a build thread in the garage and it will bring alot of input and ideas into to the table. Leave the body mount, set your rocker hight and angle down with plate and 2x2 inch tube. Post pics!
