Do you think you could make one of those rear tailgate platforms for a 2” box strong enough for a Honda 400ex like 450 lbs?

Ive seen a platform somewhere around 4' x 4' with a single wheel to support the weight, but I think it had a hinge at the reciever.

That kind of weight on the rear like that is going to make the truck handle like hell. It's near what the max tounge weight of most hitches are rated. You can find 4x8 trailers for $450 easy and sometimes less for used. It would be safer and its handy to have when you have things too big or to messy to move in your truck.

Not only do I think you can make one, I know you can make one. SEE IT HERE (http://www.atvramps.com/atv_carriers.htm)
As the others said, it's probably not the best route to go. That's a lot of weight for the hitch (especially positioned where it is) and should really be pulled on a trailer.
I made a little trailer with two purpose's.
1. Was to haul the 4 wheeler on.
2. It was small enough to tow behind the 4 wheeler, for getting out Deer/Elk while hunting.
If I remember right, the outside of the 4 wheeler tire's had about a 1/2" of clearance on each side, and the trailer was just long enough to get the 4 wheeler in and tied down.
The trailer only weigh's about 200lbs. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
