Have a mild possibility of a job opportunity there, and am wondering how the 4x4ing is?

/forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif How far from Lynchburg do you have to drive to go wheeling legally?
/forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif What's the terrain like? Mud? Hills? Rocks?
/forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif Any clubs in/near Lynchburg?

Thanks Eddie, I cant believe I forgot about Scott. Doh! Yeah but defenetily talk to him, he's up in Roanoke near me and he's told me of some rails in the general area. Like Eddie said some of the tougher trails are up this way near Roanoke (its a bit more mountainy) so like Eddie said your looking at about 1hr 1-1/2 drive to get to those from Lynchburg.

Come on to VA.. We are always looking for people to go wheeling with. We have some easy trails and some semi difficult trails, it just depends on what you / your rig are capable of.

I made another good step towards the Lynchburg job today, but of course there's no guarantee until the day you walk in the door. Here's hoping!

As for the wheeling... My truck has a 4" lift with 33" tires. However, I drive it like it has a 6" lift with 35" tires... /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif How can you know your limits if you don't go beyond them??? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wish me Luck! I'm interviewing in Lynchburg next week... If I don't get a job soon I'll be living in a Van down by the River!

Not sure if I'll have any time to kill or not, but is there anything I should try to see while I'm there?

Im not to familiar with the Lynchburg area myself, just mainly Richmond metro but there is one place that I can think of. Its the National D-Day memorial in Bedford. Its bout halfway between Lynchburg and Roanoke on Rt. 460 Maybe others from that area can elaborate for me. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Oh by the way good luck on the job interview since thats the most important thing /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Things went better than I could have hoped in Lynchburg... Still no guarantees but it's looking better all the time. Keep thinking happy thoughts!!!

/forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif So tell me anything at all about Lynchburg and/or Virginia! What you love, what you hate, where you like to eat???
/forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif Is there a 'Good' and/or 'Bad' part of Lynchburg to live in? If I get the job it will be near the airport but a 30 minute drive would be no big deal...
/forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif I have kids and cars and trucks... Is there an ideal location for a redneck gearhead to live with kids to play with, where people won't complain if my truck is in 'project mode' in the driveway for a week here and there???

I forgot a very important question!!!

/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Do they salt the roads in the winter??? In other words, am I moving to another 'rust belt' state, or will I find rust-free old iron there??? /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif

The company I interviewed with was shut down all last week for the holiday (good sign of employee-friendly company!) so I knew it would be this week before I heard anything. There is supposedly an offer letter on its way some time this week!

http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/auto/car-smiley-005.gif I GOT THE JOB!!! http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/auto/car-smiley-005.gif

Offer letter came today. Pretty much what I had hoped for. Good relocation policy, very important!!!

/forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif Problem is, they took so long to get me the offer that I now have two others!!!

http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/sarge/Eye_anim.gif Lynchburg Rocks. 4x4ing, mountains, ocean, etc. Job rocks. Jeans and T-shirts to work. Money is less than my last job.

http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/sarge/Eye_anim.gif NC job requires relo too, but has international travel. I have young kids and don't want to travel until they're out of the house, a good 18 years from now!!! Good pay and fun job though.

http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies/contrib/sarge/Eye_anim.gif Local job that pays PHENOMENAL, would be decent (but some long) hours... Suit and tie though. Hate the Monkey Suit and Politics!!!

So it's looking like I'm about to be a 'Lynchburgian' soon!!! My Wife and I are taking the weekend to think it over, but right now... VA is looking /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I used to live in Lynchburg when I was a kid. We lived outside of Lynchburg, across the James River in Amherst. It was like 30 minutes to downtown Lynchburg. Had a real nice house on an acre of land. As a kid it was great in the winter because the lot was on the side of a hill so you could sled all the way down. The neighbors were all really nice. I don't think it could have been very expensive because me dad was a teacher and my mom didn't work. So you figure he was maybe making 30,000 a year or so. Last time I was there though they had built the place up. It has been a long time since I have been there though.

A few more questions...

/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Radar Detectors Illegal??? WTF???

/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif What's the fine for getting caught with one???

/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif Do they enforce it strictly?

/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif I have a good Valentine that is 'supposedly' impervious to the detectors they use to detect your detector... /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif But it's a little outdated... What's the latest technology for catching you with the detector?

/forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif I've never heard of a law against detectors... Is VA the only state??? Why are they illegal??? I'm so confused!

Rebel88
01-08-2004, 08:41 PM
yes they are illegal...i have one and havent gotten caught with it. its a valentine 1 three piece setup...pretty sweet.

yes VA is the only state that they are illegal in...and the state speed limit only goes up to 65 at the most.

Valentines ROCK!!! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I have one too, but it's a 1998 or 1999 vintage and I'm not sure how 'invisible' it is today compared to back then. It has all the radar, and front and rear lidar...

Since I've been off the boards for a while I'll chime in /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I think the fine is $50 or something and they can seize them. Some people here at work have had some trouble with getting caught and they just ordered the valentine so we will see how it goes.

I've got two trails you need to hit with us so you can get an idea on VA wheeling. Shoot me a PM and I'll give ya my Cell # so we can hook up some time.

I'll be up for some trails in late march or early april. I'm in the middle of a few much needed repairs / upgrades. We can hit Potts Mountain if you don't mind the drive.

I also just found out about a trail called shoe creek (I think?) and it's over in your neck of the woods, supposedly it's just on the other side of lynchburg.

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif I'm going to use this new smiley not because it's really applicable to this post, but because it ROCKS!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif I have a 1977 K5 with a Mildly Modified 350 that runs strong and smooth with adequate power considering I have 2.73 gears... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif (4.10's are in the works.)

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif It has a rebuilt TH350 trans that also works great with a shift kit. NP203 T-Case completely stock.

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif I run 33" Mud Tires with what I call 'Street Tread' left on them. They're fine on the street and in rain/snow, but in the mud they're a little thin on tread. Plans for 35's follow the installation of the 4.10's.

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif As for lift, it has about 2.5" of shackle lift on the front and 4" lift blocks in the back. The shackle lift is about as poorly done as you can do it, so the driveline angles are bad and the shackles themselves are junk.

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif All in all I'd say expect a K5 with slightly more power than a stock rig, with 33" tires that should perform a little better than a rig with no lift.

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif I bought the truck early this year when I was unemployed and haven't had any money to burn on fixing it up the way I would want, with the exception of replacing the Quadrajunk with a smooth-performing Holley. That greatly enhanced the performance and quality of idle/driveability. I don't think the Holly is necessarily a significantly better carb, but the Quadrajunk was in bad shape and I had a good Holley laying around... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif So basically the truck is pretty much the way I bought it and I haven't had the cash to change the things I don't like about it or do any mods. But it's a nice ride with a pretty clean body considering its age. I've already put the first few scratches and dents in it though so now it's open season on dents!!!

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif I'd like to put 4" lift springs under the front and 6" under the back since I always have loads of tools and gear in the back, and that would leave it sitting about level most of the time. Then with 35" tires it would look about right and with 4.10 gears perform very well. I do very little freeway driving so the 4.10's shouldn't be a big deal on the rpm's. 55 is fine in the K5. If I want to go fast I take the Z28... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif As for my driving style, I used to be more of a throttle jockey, but after being out of work for a while I started worrying about having to fix expensive things and went a little easier on the throttle. Now that I'm employed again... Who knows... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif In general I like to try just about any obstacle even if I know I can't make it, as long as the others in the group don't mind waiting on me. I always ask first to make sure I'm not pissing people off by slowing the group down. I like to try everything just to improve my driving skills... If you don't try new things you'll never get better, right??? /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

/forums/images/graemlins/yikes.gif Did I answer the question or just raise more questions???
