This is on my 78 Dually C30. What do you think about it? Any ideas for beefing it up? The PO managed to tweak the bottom plate for the ball hitch setup, he had no concept of tongue weight.

Looks like suicide. Buy a hitch.

That's an amazingly bad design IMO. But you can't just buy a hitch for that. Maybe one of those weld it yourself universal hitches? Or at least brace that one better back to the frame and gusset the flat plate with concave arched (concave hypotenuse to allow use of the pintel hitch) gussets.

might think about unbolting the pintle and droping a reciever tube in there. Brace it, weld it, use a drop hitch to tow a ball mount, and get a pintle hitch adapter for the pintle. Then you could scrap that ankle whacker. My .02

I think I'm gonna replace the piece of C-channel that the pintle is mounted to with a piece of rectangular tube, put in a reciever insert, and add more bracing so that the truck frame is supporting the load more than the flatbed's frame like it is now. I don't really like the fact that the flatbed's frame is taking 90% of the tongue weight right now.
