I think it goes without saying I wouldn't be on this forum if I wasn't a fan of at least one of the big three. I just happen to be a Yota fan as well. I have had great luck with them and I think if you inquire with other owners you will find the same thing. unbreakable? Of course not, but still great vehicles. Personally I think the Honda's are even better but that is just my experiences. And yes, every GM I have EVER owned has had the motor replaced and all but two the transmission done. Call it what you want, I have never laid hands on a Toyota or Honda motor. If nothing else I can gurantee you the cost of ownership on the Toyota is far below any GM or Ford i have ever owned. |

I doubt at 94mph your still using electronic motors of the hybrid, especially during heavy acceleration.

I HAVE INTEREST! ill meet you at the urinal, its time to duel! We just had to retire dads old truck, 280k miles on his 73 c20, 350 4 speed, 3 water pumps (one of the three was a lemon), three sets of points, couple sets of plugs, carb float and a set of heater hoses. old beast sounds like it dropped a valve, just struggling along. This trucks had water up to the intake, and has been worked more than its share, she was a good truck, he got her at 31k miles 20 years ago. People thought he was crazy for paying 4 grand for an old truck. I wanna see any of these plastic cars driven as hard as dads truck and give them 40 years to see if the plastic survives.

My sister-in-law's 96 Camry blew up the engine at 80k miles, and it was was maintained and a nice car. Sucks too, they lost their tail on that thing.

Did they replace the rubber band in that Camry? I recently had a chance to buy a '94 with 366k on the clicker so I would say something went astray.
As for a urinal contest here you go...I had an '81 Toyota 4wd pickup as a kid with the 22RE. It had 37" Thornbirds with stock gears and I burned more clutches out doing clutch drops to do burn outs than I care to remember. One night of being a stupid kid I tried driving it across the CT river and found a hole that sank it about 3ft above the roof. After the environmental police and the towing company showed up and retrieved it they gladly gave me large fines and towing bills. The truck sat at impound for for 8 months while everything was settled and I came up with $1200 for the tow bill. I had it towed home, drained all the fluids...mostly water, fired right up and drove it another 6 yrs through college until I eventuially rolled it in another display of adulthood wheeling. A buddy bought it, built a little truggy out of it and is still beating the crap out of it to this day. Now if you want to compare a Toyota to a 3/4 ton pickup in terms of work capacity then there is no contest. Compare it to a ranger or an S10 and lets go from there. For a little truck they are stout and take a hell of a pounding. I beat the tar out of all of mine. I even towed my k5 blazer on several occasions behind my '06 which was a 4cyl 5 speed access cab 4wd. My 6.5 Chevy k2500 almost pukes when you put that much weight behind it, heck it even had a motor replacement at 96k due to the all too common 6.5 wrist pin failure. We can tell fishing stories all day but it really doesn't get us anywhere. And I agree, I feel bad for the people who have been hurt by this problem. All major automakers have had problems of this degree. I simply think they are doing a high degree of mucking in this case. Everyone realizes that the pedal assembly is manufactured here in the US and nearly all auto makers except Ford source to them correct? |

The only place I have ever heard of Toyotas accelerating uncontrollably is here, and MSN. Usually with stuff like this I hear it from some mechanic or whatnot. I don't have enough info to form a real opinion.
As for the longevity of American made cars, I envision my Yukons motor still trying to run with blown rings, oil leaks, cobbled wiring, having run for many more years and miles than it rightly should have. I just tore into it for the first time in its life to fix the Vortec intake gasket problem, at 150,000 miles. Other than the fuel pump and the designed-to-fail water pump, that is all that I have done to it, the engine at least. Brakes, front wheel bearings, and the pitman arm, and that's it. Considering how hard I have driven it, not too shabby. I love my truck and it will be a mistake to sell it.
