you guys get an 'instant' match on your 401? Interesting! Ive only ever had 2 jobs where you could get a 401k, but in both cases it was a quarterly-kinda-thang. I didn't even know such a thing was possible.

My previous job had instant match... and they match Roth contributions. Talk about free money!

Damn! My company's 401 plan rocks (you can get up to a 10% dollar-for-dollar match!), but I really wish the match was paid right away. If nothing else it would make retirement timing easier...

I got a whopping 25% of my contributions up to 6% of my salary. Any money is free money - but I'd kill for a 100% match up to 10%. That'd be a ton of extra free retirement savings annually. (looking up careers at WF as we speak )

The company I worked for used to match 100% up to 15% but then they dropped down to 10% because many people maxed their contributions and they felt the hurt.
They also gave us shares in the company and after 5 years I came out with $28k.
Not bad.

As you said, any match is free money! Our match used to be 6%...and in those days we also had a pension plan. That got frozen a couple years ago and they replaced it with a profit sharing "match" of 0-4% based on the previous years company performance. Right now that is 2%, so the effective match this year is 8%, dollar for dollar. I don't have any complaints about the plan other than the instant-match thing.
