4ht of July weekend at Holy Cross

Where: Holy Cross 4x4 trail.
Driving Directions (from traildamnage.com)

Take I-70 to exit 171 marked U.S. 24. Just after the Hornsilver Campground turn right on 703. You will see signs to Blodgett Campground and Homestake Reservoir. The trail is about 9 miles down 703 on the right marked FS 759. It is just past the Gold Park Forest Service Campground.

Alternatively, you can drive north from Leadville on U.S. 24 past Camp Hale. Turn left on 703 just past some switchbacks.

Camping Spot: We usually camp off Homestake road just before Gold Park Campground at GPS cords Lat. 39 24.392N Long. 106 26.068 W. Hopefully I can get the same spot.

CB Channel 4

When: the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th of July (Meeting at trail haed at about 09:30 to wheel on the 6th)

We will be hading up on the 5th to find/revserve a large camping spot to accomdate several 4x4 vehicles and tow rigs. We wil be wheeling Holy Cross on the 67th and 7th and then heading home on the 8th.

I know a lot of people complain about the crowds on this weekend but I have been there several times and have not had any problems with crowds . Yes, the trail will have other vehicles on it but what trail wont

That sounds like fun. We were in the area last weekend to camp. We camped in Mcallister Gulch. You could only get about 2-3 miles before the drifts started. Ptarmigan pass and Shrine pass are still gated. Needless to say we didn't get much 4-wheelin' done but we did manage to have a blazing campfire and get after some Bushmills We didn't go up Homestake at all but it looked snowier on that side of the valley.

Not that we needed all that to go four wheeling, but once you get into locked a serious parts collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Nick (aka: B_to_C) will be visiting from his new posting in DC that weekend. But I think we're gonna run Iron Chest. We've both run Holy Cross but Nick has yet to do Iron Chest. It is a great, must do CO trail IMO. Not as challenging as HC, but still fun and the view at the end is awesome.

Super lucky for me. I was trying to find some people to go wheeling with and places to go during the week of the 4th. I will be coming in hopefully late Saturday, June 30th and staying in Pitkin. If its alright I would like to tag along, as I have always wanted to wheel Holy Cross. I won't be in a K5 (mine is too much of a mall crawler), but I'll be in a TJ with 35 km2s, d44s f/r, 5.13s, ARBs, long arms, etc. Will this do alright for this wheeling?

I also wouldn't mind going and doing Iron Chest as its much closer to Pitkin than Holy Cross, but I want to do as much wheeling as I can while I'm there.

Anyone want to help me make a choice? I was fixing to make a thread on places to go and wheel that week of the 4th.

Oh some day I want to wheel those trails with my K5 or burb.
I went with a rental Jeep cherokee 7 years ago with my girlfriend and went as far as a stock Jeep will go and then camped there next to a lake and went hiking all over the place, ended up at the top of Holy Cross mountain and proposed to her, greatest week of my life.
