700R4...K Case?

been searching the archived posts, but still need answers. looking for a 700r4 to hook up to an early 205 off a th350. i have the adapter and sleeve and will get an output shaft from ORD. is there a difference between the 2wd and 4wd cases like the th400? is there any benifits to spending the extra dough on an '88-'91 that i can't get by getting an '86-'87 and upgrading when i build it? been getting conflicting info from junkyards, trans shops, friends, etc. i'm looking to do the swap on the cheap(not going to happen) so i'm looking for the best year to get a buildable core from a yard or someone parting out.

Re: 700R4...K Case?

I've heard the K case is the strongest of the 700's but they only came in the first few years. Not sure how true this is. Probly true cos the first 700's to come out were the worst so they had to make the case stonger to handle the exploding internals.

Re: 700R4...K Case?

The 700r "K" case is just a thicker casting used on "K" series chevy trucks (or 4wd trucks). The case will have a big K stamped on the right(?) side. I'd stay w/ the K case cuz you'll probably spend more converting the thinner 2wd case. You definitely want to go w/ '86 or newer cuz this is when the tranny got all its improvements. As far as '89-91... I'm not sure what year it was (somewhere in the late '80s early 90s), but GM started going w/ the computer controlled 4L60E, which is essentially a computer controlled 700r. All this info was given to me by my transmission guy who's been building 700Rs since their conception. Hope some of this info helps. -Tommy
Ps. this ought to really piss you of... I just scraped my 700r K case for a hundred bucks including t-case. And it was like pullin teeth to get that much for it. Seems like most of these rednecks down here only build for cosmetics. I can say "redneck" cuz I am one myself. :P
-I'm only kinding. Please don't send me any hate mail.

Re: 700R4...K Case?

Thanks for the info, it will help a lot. Next question, how do you identify the year of the trans when it setting in the yard out of the truck. These are my first posts to the site after a couple of weeks of reading. This site is awesome!!!

Re: 700R4...K Case?

Not sure on that one. You'll probably have to get the casting numbers off the tranny itself and run 'em that way -and I'm really not sure how that'll work. I'll get w/ my tranny guy and see what he says -Tommy

Re: 700R4...K Case?

I heard and read GM inproved the 700R4 trannies in 1985. The "K" on the tranny bellhousing is only one way to check for the 4x4 type tranny. The other way to check is to look at the flange where the flywheel cover bolts on the bottom. A "K" housings flange should be thicker and uses 6 mounting holes for the cover. A regular tranny will not have a thick flange and will only use 4 small screws or bolts for the thin type sheet metal or plastic cover. The 6 bolt cover is a thick 1/4 inch cover. These covers have two mounting holes on the bottom to run strut rods/braces to the motor mounts. On the motor mounts will be two brackets that bolt on them too.
