Re: 1/2 ton with a gooseneck trailer? pros cons?

a fella i work with runns a 87 K10 with a 700r. and tows a horse trailer all the time with it, he says it does just fine.

it'll work but not as good as a 3/4 or 1ton pickup. also be sure the railer has working brakes cause with a 1/2 ton it will need the help.

also my fathers cousin will tow 20,000 pounds with his 454ss pickup but he's also a little nuts

A gooseneck would do better than a bumper mount.

What kind of gross trailer weight are we talking about here?

what size is the trailer? 18 feet or 38 feet, that would make a difference.

Just the trailer? not a problem. Goosenecks seem to be rather forgiving as compared to bumper mounts.

You might want to add some overloads or airbags though.

Oh yeah, do keep out of OD.

20-25 foot length i think, i kind of figured i should have some kind of support back there other than the 1/2 ton springs. thanks for all your help.

Might want to swap in an axle with a heavier load rating too, i cant see that SF 10 bolt lasting very long with a loaded 25' goose over it.

It doesn't matter as much the deminsions of the trailer as it does the total weight. That is why your pickup as a max load rating in pounds, not trailer length. I wouldn't pull a trailer more than 4 tons gross with a 1/2 ton regardless if it's a gooseneck or not. I bet you will be close to maxed out with just the trailer if it's 25ft long. My 3 axle 20' flatbed gooseneck weighs 5,500lbs empty.
