AMMO Question, Federal Expanding Tip, not a hollow point...
Thought about buying some for my USPc40, its like a regular target round (trucated cone I think is what its called?), I'm guessing it would be a good feeding ammo. It has good expansion rates and penitration of cover.
Anyone use this, hear of the Federal Expanding tips?

I have a friend that shoots nothing but federal and he loves it. Great ammo overall.

Best way to know is to try a box. Some guns will shoot one kind of ammo fine, and others won't. Just have to give it a try

Re: AMMO Question, Federal Expanding Tip, not a hollow point...
Heard good things about them!
They are quite wonderful, kinda like all the benfits of a hollow point, but with some better ballistics. Mind you, I've never tried it on gellatin or meat, or anything to gauge its acutal effectiveness, but they fire just dandy, other than the pricy cost of most Federal brands. Not to mention is a lot cleaner, you dont get lint building up inside the JHP cavities. |

Unrelated, but back when I had my .44, I watched Taxi Driver for the fifth time and though, "Hey, what about vampires" and I carried around a speedloader full of crossed JSP

[ QUOTE ] 23 Aug 01 The end of hollowpoint pistol ammunition? I've now had a chance to test both Cor-Bon Powerball and Federal EFMJ (Expanding Full-Metal Jacket) pistol ammunition in 45ACP. Both perform as advertised! The 165gr Cor-Bon round looks like a softpoint, but the tip is actually plastic, not exposed lead. The bullet profile duplicates hardball. The 200gr Federal round looks like hardball with a truncated nose. If one didn't look closely, he would easily mistake it for standard hardball. Cor-Bon uses a hard plastic ball imbedded in the hollow cavity to initiate expansion. Federal uses a blob of soft plastic. Upon impact, Powerball opens up like a standard hollowpoint. EFMJ collapses internally, pushing out a segmented skirt. Both these two rounds combine all the feeding reliability of hardball with terminal expansion worthy of any modern hollowpoint. The concept really brings together the best of both worlds. In addition, neither round will plug up on clothing as conventional hollowpoints sometimes do. As this ammunition catches on, I predict open-mouth hollowpoint pistol ammunition will gradually disappear. Within ten years, it will all be displaced by this new technology. It's what I'm carrying now. /John [/ QUOTE ] Aug of 2001 |

more research
http://www.thegunzone.com/efmj.html http://www.patricks-home.de/efmj/EFMJ1.html (pics fired from MP5's) 124grain 9mm +Phttp://www.geocities.com/goldenloki2/9mm/gel9.html http://www.allsafedefense.com/Specia...BulletTest.htm [ QUOTE ] PremiumŪ Expanding Full Metal Jacket An ideal choice for agencies that don't permit hollow point ammunition, this revolutionary barrier-penetrating design combines a scored full metal nose over an internal rubber tip that collapses on impact. It never fills with barrier material and assures expansion on every shot. A lead core at the base maintains weight retention. [/ QUOTE ] http://www.federalpremium.com/defaul...enu=1&s1=7 http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...3/fae238b1.jpg [ QUOTE ] I'm told that there's some controversy over whether or not the EFMJ "wounds" as effectively as regular JHP or PowRball due to the fact that when it strikes a target, the pre-stressed sides open and a hard, white silcone-like "bullet core" expands from between the slits. Some opine that its being softer and more rounded lessens its terminal effect. I've heard of but one shooting with the +P version. Supposedly, it worked just fine. The recovered bullet was reportedly in the neighborhood of sixty-caliber...a similar result seen in both water and soaked newsprint.
