gm part number on ring gear

Does anyone know what these gm part numbers stand for? This is what the numbers read on the ring gear: 3817778 11:41 GM 1-70, any info would help. It's on about a '70 model C10 4x4. Thanks!

Re: gm part number on ring gear

Ok, the 11:41 is the gear ratio. Divide the 41 by 11 to get 3.73 ratio.
The 1-70 is the date when it was built. January of 1970.
The 3817778 is the bill of materials code numbers (I think - not very positive).

Lastly, lets get one thing correct here. You said '70 model C10 4x4'. A 'C10' would be a 2wd truck because the 4x4 models use the 'K' model designation. So, you need to call your truck a '70 model K10 4x4'. In other words, C means 2wd and K means 4wd.

Thanks for the info. The truck was in a junk yard and has a C10 fender on it.

Re: gm part number on ring gear

FYI 3817778 is not the bill of materials code number !
It is the GM part #
Dana(Spicer) uses bill of materials code numbers, and they usually place them on the outside of the diff.
not on the ring gear !

Re: gm part number on ring gear

Ok, I see how you are! You are going around to "check" on one persons quotes! Nice!

BTW, notice the parenthesis's I used (I think - not very positive)? I did not make any claims that those numbers WERE the bill of materials. I didnt know what those numbers were so I just made a guess. Any guess is better than NO guess!!! Just makes the other person go out to find out the info for himself. OR, just wait for somebody like you to come along and "twist" the whole thing around!

I can see why you dont list your email address and name!

Also, I can see you are a "drifter", go from one state to another. Whats up with that?

Re: gm part number on ring gear

A guess is better than no guess, as long as you say something like I did, like my quote, "I think - not very positive". A quote like that will get others to reply or get the person to seek more info. If you search around, I say this quote quite a bit, to help others out. On those infos that I am not positive on, I always leave a quote like that in parenthesis.

So, did the "drifter" thing get out of hand? If so, sorry. BTW, I think I am finished bitching back and forth with you. Life goes on now.
