6.2liter diesel on 84 blazer

I am looking at buying an 84 blazer but it has a 6.2liter diesel and it has a 700-R4. The blazer itself is in decent condition witha perfect running 4X4. My buddy wants $750 for it. Is it worth getting and fixing it up with the diesel or in the future converting it to a chevy 350 or big block.

Re: 6.2liter diesel on 84 blazer

depends on what your going to do with it. If its just a daily driver and to pull trailer diesel is fine. serious 4 wheelin I'd switch it. I have an 83 w/ a 6.2 and love it. How many miles are on it. They say you can get 400k on the motor maintained properly.

fix'n finally

Blasphemous heathens! Remove thy selves from this board, lest ye anger the diesel gods even more!

Seriously, please don't screw up a good 6.2 blazer with a gasser. GM made plenty of "them", diesels are the sought after models with $2.00 a gallon gas (I get over 22mpg with 35" mud radials and 4.56 gears). Although a 6.2 could hardly be considered over-powered, it's not bad; use your gears! Never knock out an ignition system going through DEEP water with a diesel (ask SK-15). Diesels don't stall when you climb up and down the near vertical wall.

Real trucks don't have spark plugs!

Buy it and stick with the diesel, though I only get 17 mpg. But thats better then a gasser!

Re: 6.2liter diesel on 84 blazer

THANKS DIESELDAN, I take that as the warmest welcome I'll get to this board. Thank you for the reply though. The more I hear, the more I am liking the whole " diesel" thing. I have a lot to learn about diesels but I guess I'll never find out unless I buy one and work on it and ask a sh**load of questions. oh and thanks both of you for your avg. mpg I needed a little input on that too. I just hope this engine has been well maintained. It sounds like this engine will last a while if it has been taken care of. I know my friend took care of it but if it is original 6.2 , who knows who's beat the hell out of it since 1984

Re: 6.2liter diesel on 84 blazer

I replied on the main board. I will reply again.
Get the Deisel. $750 is a steal!! Do a CarFax report on it and look at the previos owners. For off road use...its great. Climb that hill...forge that river....sink in the middle of that mud hole? Yes. the one downside that I have found is that the sucker is HEAVY. If you like mud, good, just don't stop...you will sink.
I have hydrolocked mine....if you don't know what hydrolocking is...imagine the air that gets sucked into an engine being turned into water. At 20+:1 compression water ain't that good. Read the Midwest Spring K5 Report on the main page. Find out how my Diesel did STOCK. I got locked up in the middle of that pond....fun fun fun.

It doesn't sound like I want to experience hydrolocking. Thanks sk-15 I'll check out the history and probably will get it.

Re: 6.2liter diesel on 84 blazer

Don't drive into the ocean and you won't have any problems with hydrolocking. I have an 84 k5 with a 6.2. It's a new motor from a van 84-89, but it's alright. Good thing about the 6.2 is it is easy as hell to work on. All I need is the tech manual flowcharts and a test light. Damn near every bolt and nut under the hood is either 15mm or 13mm. If the motor and drivetrain are sound, I'd get it. Watch out for the tranny, though. If it's anything like my 700, it's crap(but then, the 700 was crap to begin with). First thing to get is a big(read: BIG) tranny cooler.

I second the BIG tranny cooler. I got the B&M 24,000 cooler. No problems.
