nv4500 np205 question? Need help!

Ok, I think I have found my answer to my question searching through old posts, but before I celebrate I want to make sure I'm on the right track and anyone’s help would be very much appreciated. Ok here goes, I'm going to get a nv4500 for my burb, I want to put a np205 behind it, but my question is, I just recently tracked down a np205 it's in a 88 1/2 ton chevy pickup with a turbo 350, I want to know if I could use it and how hard would it be to make it work, buying a $500 dollar adaptor is out of the question, but this is what I found in the old archives.

You can also bolt any 6 bolt style 205 up to it! 32 spline of course!!!!

A 85-91 NP205 will bolt on with a couple of mods.

1. 80-84 32-spline "short" input shaft
2. Notch the extension housing for shifter rail clearance.

So does this mean I can use the np205 out of a 88 1/2 ton pickup that originally had a turbo 350, with a Chevrolet nv4500 with a little modification?
Just want to be sure about this before I spend the cash on a np205 that I might not be able to use. Thanks allot to everyone.

for one, the th350 is 27 spline and so is the np205. I believe the nv4500 is 32 spline. Id find a round pattern np 205 from the 80 and newer crew cabs or 1 tons with a 32 spline input. The th350/np205 version did not come stock on a 1988 and if it did, the input bearing is too small for the input shaft for a 32 spline transmission which then will need machining to fit the bigger size bearing (not a good route imo). I believe all round pattern (6 bolt) np205s are 32 spline as they only used them on sm465's and th400's which have 32 splines. There is such thing as a long input and a short input. You would need the short input which is 80-91 th400's only. The long input is on the sm465 versions that are 32 spline 86-91.

First of all thank you very very much, second, lets say maybe the guy made a mistake, and it is a th400. I haven't actually seen the truck, he just said he had a np205 for me, one of the last things I asked him was, What kind of transmission does it have, does it have a th350, and that's wear I probably messed up and should have just asked him what did it have instead of suggest something because then he kinda looked down and then looked up and said yeah, that's what it's got, so if you say that wouldn't of been stock on an 88 1/2 ton, Then what's the chances of it being a th400 and np205. I could ask to look at the truck and figure it out. Again thanks allot.

As long as its a round bolt pattern 205 your fine. You can change the input and bearing, just have to get the case bored out ($$). HOWEVER NP205 in a '88 1/2 ton? That shouldn't be in there, you better go check things out and get some pics.

Get an 85'+ round pattern 205 and get the spacer from AA. It's $100. That's what I did when I did mine and that's what we're doing on my brothers.

Ok, I think I found the spacer. So if I can find a np205 that came off a th400 I can use this spacer and that's all I will need, or is there anything else that has to be done????? I'm just trying not to get in over my head, and I'm going to try and do it right the first time. Thanks again.

I put together an NV4500-NP205 setup and slammed it in my Flatbed Tow Rig a couple weeks before the 2000 mile moab trip.
The AA aluminum conversion bellhousing was on backorder for like 2-3 months out.
I said Screw Advance adapters and their custom adapters and bellhousings... i was on a deadline and i had to get it in my tow rig for moab (the weekend before). Heres what i did..

-chevy 32 spline 4x4 nv4500
-'88+ Round pattern NP205.
-Short 32 spline np205 input gear.
-Lakewood scattershield.

I put the short 32 spline input gear in the np205, and had to do some griding on the nv4500 tailshaft housing.. A large notch for the shift rod and linkage on the np205, and also some clearancing for the idler nut on the np205.
Other than that it is a bolt together deal and no AA spacer necessary.
I got a lakewood scattershield for an early style 4 speed tranny, then dropped it off at a machine shop with the input bearing retainer off my nv4500.. had them bore the scattersheild bellhousing, then i drilled and bolted the scattershield to the tranny.
(this will probably only work for the early style 96 earlier nv4500's i think with the 5.125" Bearing retainer, NOT the 5.7" OD retainer. so make sure you measure yours before you try customizing a scattershield.)
It was a lot more work aligning the transmission input shaft splines to the clutch because i already had the bellhousing bolted to the transmission, thats the way it got bolted together.. (I was thinking about doing weld nuts on the inside of the bellhousing but decided not to.)
Since its a steel bellhousing, we just welded a bracket for a hydro slave cylinder right to it for a hydro clutch setup.
I also had to fab a bracket for the np205 shifter & bolt to thread into. it was MUCH easier fabbing a shifter bracket with the combo bolted together sitting on the ground next to the truck before i installed it.
