"ACCEL" motor oil, anyone know anything about it?

I bought 5 quarts of this oil at wally world tonight. The brand is "ACCEL' and it's 10W-40. The bottle states that it is "SF quality for model years 1988 and earlier".

Then it states on the back:
"...recommended for gasoline engines in older cars and trucks prior to 1989. This oil provides oxidation stability and antiwear performance relative to oils meeting the prior API performance standard SE. This oil also provides protection against engine deposits, rust and corrosion."

Then it also says again that it is SF rated and not suitable for use in engines built after 1988.
It is distributed by "Warren Performance Products"


So is this oil like the old stuff that will protect flat-tappet camshafts? It is only $2.19/quart.

See the viscosity for yourself or even compare it with a simple sight and feel.

Ive seen an oil called texas oil down here and that **** looks like cool aid

The SF oil you have there would have the highest amount of zinc & phosphorus permissible for passenger car oils made back then.

Still not as much anti wear additive as a high zinc racing oil, but better than what you can get for passenger cars today..Might be closer to a CI4 (pre 2007) diesel oil.

the zinc & phosphorus it has would piss off the cats & O2 sensors on an OBD II car, so be careful where you use it.

Cool, I'll be using this stuff from now on then Lol, I don't have to worry about OBD2, the newest vehicle I have is a '91. Heck, I only have a couple with cats even.

So the newer diesel oils aren't even made the same now?

No, they changed in 2007..the new designation is CJ4..lower zinc & phosphorus, and the TBN is lower too.

i run Rotella 15-40 in my 454. Easy to find and will have higher zinc and phosphorus than a 10-30 thats "recommended" for it.

Comp Cams has a high zinc content additive for engine break in, and they recommend to use it all the time for flat tappet cams. It's about $11. You can order it from jegs or summit if you don't have a local store that carries it. I just put some in the 383 i built

Yes, but I'm cheap and would like to use good oil to start with and save $11 an oil change. And I even have a Jeg's about 10 miles down the road from me

$11 is a lot cheaper than a cam

Yes, I know, I just recently installed a cam in the 350 that I just bought oil for. That's why I was asking if this ACCEL oil was any good, which it seems to be. So there shouldn't be a need to dump in a bottle of break-in lube every oil change. I have a lot of vehicles (I have a bunch of cars too) and an extra 11 bucks an oil change will add up quick.
