Machine work costs..............good deal or not?
This is what I paid for the machine work on the block, thought I would throw it out and see how competitive they are with your experiences.
Surface both banks parallel to crank shaft 90.00 Grind v/8 crankshaft M..010 T.0.10 130.00 Bore & honev/8 block .040" with torque plate finish for moly rings 146.25 Hot tank block, R&R camshaft bearings & oil plugs, chase all threads 75.00 R&R 8 pistons check pin clearances 70.00 Balance complete V8 assembly 300.00 Align hone 5 main bearings 113.75 Machine Aluminum front cover for shaft clearance of gear drive 25.00 Crank scraper & windage tray assembly 55.00 Long block assembly,Degree cam & file fit gapless rings 152.57 TOTAL LABOR: $1157.75 This is in Canadian dollars which equals $751.78 U.S. Just curious how much this is costing everyone in the lower 48. I live in Alaska and so I sent it to Canada because there aren't any machine shops here.I thought it was a fair price.Would like to hear some feed back |

I would expect to pay in the neighborhood of $1000.00USD, I would have to agree that you got a very good deal

COOL....I thought it was reasonable but wasn't for sure. I knew for sure the assembly cost was dirt cheap, I would consider having them do some more in the future, It might even be worth shipping stuff into Canada from the lower 48 state's if the cost of shipping doesn't over come the bargain.

Re: Machine work costs..............good deal or not?
The strength of the US dollar over the Cdn dollar is what makes it a good deal for you...

Yeah..... it's nice being able to go there and buy things for less, still I dont think you can find a place that would assemble the long block file fit rings and degree the cam. for 152.00 Canadian OR US. I would consider paying the total in US funds for all the work it's still sounds reasonable to me!......BUT (there's always a but) it took them 4 mo. to get it done they are really backed up.

Re: Machine work costs..............good deal or not?
Sounds like you did pretty good.
The shop where I'm from charges $50-$80 for just about anything you want done. The only time this isn't the case is if you take it to them dirty. Their turn around is usually less than a week and if you take it to them on Tuesday or Wednesday they'll get it to you the next day most of the time. They're cool people. You might see Bill Reichert on ESPN once in a while since he does the NHRA stuff. Where I live now most everything is right around $70-$100. Most everything has to be shipped out though. They don't bore the blocks or turn cranks around here. It's kind of funny because the local morons think that I'm going to pay $350 for a motor I can't hear run.. |
