Smoke while jump starting

I tried to start my 84 K5 about 10 minutes ago after it had been sitting for about 4 months. It normal fires right up without effort, but I expected more trouble this time. I turned the key and nothing. No clicking or even trying to start. I hooked up the jumper cables to my 01 GMC and hooked the ground to chassis ground on the 84 and I touched the positive to the + on the battery and got sparks. No biggy. Adjusted the cables on the 01 and tried again to get a nice little plume of smoke from around the starter (I think) with that wonderful burnt wire smell. Any ideas of what happened here. Oh, still no start. Any and all help would be great! Thanks!

Re: Smoke while jump starting

Are you positive your ground to the chassis wasn't touching anything else?

Re: Smoke while jump starting

Are you sure that your battery cables aren't super crappy?

Re: Smoke while jump starting

My negative jumper cable was attached to the alternator braket. My battery cable are in good shape. No fraying or cracking at all.

Re: Smoke while jump starting

I've always used that and never had a problem in the past. That is a good question though? It should be grouned well enough.

Re: Smoke while jump starting

Thats where my ground wire is...from the battery to the altenator bracket. Is this a bad spot for grounding?

Re: Smoke while jump starting

I think the spot is fine. There is quite a bit of metal etc.

Re: Smoke while jump starting

Any thoughts on what I fried when I saw the smoke? I was looking at the wiring diagram and I was thinking maybe the fuseable link. Maybe ??????
